Oven cooking woodchips

I want to put woodchips into a lager I have conditioning and was wondering whether anyone sterilises woodchips by cooking them in the oven, or does this change the flavour of the woodchip? I don't want to soak them in anything as I only want wood flavour, not whiskey or rum etc.

I put them in some water and nuke them in the microwave for a minute or two.

I don't have a microwave but have read I can boil them in some water which I can do on the stove. Do you put the water in as well?

No, I didn't although I don't think it would be an issue if you did.
