Out of date freebees?

Ive been given some campden tablets, yeast, compound, wine stabiliser potassium sorbate, and citric acid but looks quite old.
Do these items have a use by date? some are still sealed, some are opened.

What is the citric acid for?

Wine yeasties like a nice balance of nutrients and a bit of acid.
Also, a bit of acid and a bit of tannin improves the balance and body of your wine.

If you are making country wines from scratch, many fruits contain enough natural acids. Others like bananas and pears are low in acids so you might need to add some. You would also need it for vegetable or flower wines.

All of that stuff you list should carry a “use-by” date, so I'd be inclined to bin the lot. They aren't expensive, most pots will be £1 - £2 but will go a long way. I usually cost them into my recipes at 5-10p per gallon.

yeast probably useless the rest shoul to fine campden tablets, acids they don't do out of date. Anything discoloured should go straight away though.

I use citric acid to clean my HLT and boiler of lime scale build up hot water and a spoon of acid and it comes up shiny.

Citric might be ok. Taste a few crystals.

Unless you're asthmatic, pop the top off the Campdens and waft the pot under your nose. If you don't cough, chuck'em away.

No, she's not a fantastic vessel, she's an ageing old girl with an old engine and an old gearbox, but I hope I've given her a good few years more in service, and she suits me. When the kids are a bit older and the mortgage is cleared, that's it, I'm off cruising the system. Put a potter's wheel and a small wood lathe onboard (and some brewing kit) and that will be me sorted. Wife is welcome to come along, if she must.
