just started doing homebrew so ive started with the kits first going well but i want to start doing my own , my question is about the og and fg ,do you take the og wen you put everything in fermenting vessel after yeast etc ,and then the fg at the end of fermentation, ive brought a book for beginners but it doesnt put things in simple to understand terms they think you no all terms and abrevations for things :drunk:

og is the original gravity before you put in the yeast at 20c

sg is the specific gravity whenever you take it, I do this often purely for quality control purposes ;)

fg is the final gravity that you bottle or barrel it

OG is taken before or right after the yeast is pitched, its a measure of the total disolved sugars before fermentation starts.

FG is, as you say, the measure taken after fermentation is over (or mostly over since you do want some carbonation in the beer).

Beer differs from wine in that you don't kill/remove the yeast before bottling/kegging, unless you're force carbonating. FG is a good enough way to express the specific gravity at which you're going to bottle/keg, though I suppose if you were really anal you'd have to call it BG (bottling gravity) or something. ;)
