They go for absolutely stupid money.
As an aside, a reconditioned engine for that is in the region of £10k.

The problem is, all the other bits that'll need replacing will cost around the same amount I can imagine.

The best option would be to find a wrecker.

They're not even a particularly nice looking car. The only thing going for them is the cosworth engine. But that's not all that special either.

If you want a classic, there are so many better ones out there for £55k or less.

I assume it's someone with lots of money who owned one back in the day, I would love to own my favourite car again which was a 2.3 V6 Cortina if I had loads of money the price wouldn't stop me.

I remember back in the day my mate had a Marina which if you lifted the carpet in the boot you could see the road!
He also had a 1.6 Cortina that when you went round corners a bit sharpish you could smell petrol. We found a hole in the fuel filler pipe which we bunged with some mesh and filler. We also fitted a new wing somehow but never painted it as the car was brown so eventually we figured it would rust to a similar colour. I can also remember going with him to buy it off a girl we were in school with...she wanted £200 but he had it for £160.

Loved my old man's escort cosworth. When I was 19 the rest of the family were abroad and my parents used my car for the airport run, leaving me with the cosworth. Took a girl out on a date and it got nicked. End of that fun.

That's a bit too lime for my tastes.
Though I know a farmer that and a 2.8i Capri in his barn.
Don't know if it's still there, it's been sold or he's given it to his son.
He was in Essex though, so not surprised he had it.

Generally, Geoff Buys Cars is a proper knob. But he's bang on here. Something amiss!

People slap a bit of oil on a canvas which probably cost a few pence when they painted the picture and others pay multi millions for it I don't get it I do get cars if a couple of hundred thousand pounds is pocket change who are we to say they are wrong for paying it?

The problem with a car like this is that it's just going to get passed around collectors and never driven.
The thing has only done 2,000 miles in its nearly 30 year history.

So ultimately, yes. It's like that piece of art. Except this one will get put into a very expensive warehouse and into a bubble.
It's not going to sit in someone's garage.

This is what people think a collector's garage looks like. This is Chris Evans - he has an office with some sofas at one end so that he can appreciate his cars

Whereas in reality, this is where most of these types of car end up

It is Veblen goods - the more expensive they get, the more in demand they will be
I am under impression our world economy has so much excess money that we start having overinflated prices on many rare things just because they are rare
I sometimes think we could make a tree holy and start selling its leaves - each leaf is unique like a bitcoin, it is a limited produce, we can issue a digital certificate per leaf and start selling it like a bitcoin. Why not?

I can see it. If you have the cash you'd be all over it. Modern cars are ****. Well they are great but they are ****. Some people will never understand that for many car enthusiasts a car is more than just a lump of metal and machinery and represents so much more. Like people banging on about the Beatles...they were big in their time but time has moved on but those who experienced the Beatles back in the day will always put them on a pedestal. Same with cars. Modern cars are so sanitised and boring, and alot more expensive relatively than they were. Sometimes you have to question progress for progress sake. It's purely an emotional thing. I got more excited the other day seeing an old Triumph Toledo on the road than seeing some new Ferrari which I couldn't identify as they all look the same these days.

I love watching Harrys Garage but often just skim through his road tests of the newer cars...they're all the same and meh - too expensive, too capable, too big, too complicated, too heavy. Much prefer his content on his older cars and motorbikes. My Tesla is so soul-less. Just an iPad on wheels. I'd swap it out for may old 1987 Porsche 944 turbo in a heartbeat - wish I'd kept it since I couldn't afford to buy it back again now prices have shot up. Used to look forward to getting into that thing...I never look forward to getting into the Tesla.
