ok grain milled for a stout

my stouts are usually fairly well received so im happy enough with the grain side of things...

im so tempted to use different hops..

full packs i have

columbus
challenger
cascade (pellets) never used pellets before
northern brewer
goldings
citra
target

challenger i have used and worked well...

target is the other obvious one to use...

If it's like your last one it will be superb. I've just kegged mine, and an EPA. Reckon I'll get one more in before Christmas, which will give me 80 litres of a nice selection. Happy days.....

all done and cleared up
few things done different this time
mashed for 2 hrs (had to go into work) lost just under 2 degrees
also batch sparged

also managed to cool 50 litres in just under 20 mins which was a good bit quicker that previous few brews.

Stuck brew finally dropped a few points.. 1.016 ish....big bottles cause it wasn't worth effort ...Meh might run lawnmowers on it next year.....

Yay first brew of year.

bit late this year brewed NYD last year.
Meh close enough

Todays brew A Brown Porter care of "brewing stouts and porters ,History Origins and 60 recipes by Terry Foster"

i nearly followed the recipe

when i scaled it up to 45 litres i was about 100 grams short in crystal/chocolate.Rather than open 2 new packs of grain i added 100 grms carafa III that i had used a while back.

quantity wise short in volume and over in sg.

close enough

i fermenter wlp004 (made up in a 1ltr starter)
second pack of so4

i also bottled 45 330 ml bottles of the ella/cascade lager....it might well turn out "interesting"

Busy Day

Brewed and bottled

Bottled half the last batch the wlp004

Originally had thought of hop back summer lightning co G wheeler..

scaled it up on brewsmith milled grain..also added some torrified wheat....new mashtun warming nicely, 60 odd litres of water heating all going well...

then i went looking hops....i have a box full of unopened hops and was sure i had challenger.......nope multiple packs of columbus and cascade(both leaf and pellet)..

checked freezer and had about 40 grams..

plan b

after using a few expletives the letter c was still in my mind...ive used columbus a fair bit in recent months..and cascade in my brew before last..

Citra to the rescue...which i havent used before.

so grain bill 9240 grams minch (end of last stock)
750 grams torrified wheat
90 min boil
50 grams citra 90 mins
40 grms last 15...(90 grams or just over in a 100 gm pack...will be checking future purchases(first time that has happened))
45 litre batch

was first time using new shiney thermo pot......mash temp loses no longer an issue..

batch split into 2 fermenters

one with mj workhorse one with s04

have recently got a 60 litre fermenter but need to work out how to move the damn thing from shed to heat of house without killing myself/getting killed (not exactly easy to hide)
good for storing grain mind (might get more as i have grain in work i need to store and shed is kinda damp)

RedX seems to be the in-thing around here.

I've not used it but like the idea. Do you think English style hops will work best with it?

I tend to plan my brews more around what hops I want to try out, and the grain bill comes second, so I've a few planned brews for which I haven't settled on a grain bill, such as simcoe/mosaic, first gold, Riwaka.

My last load of pales have had same grain bill...so time for a change.

Ok bit of a **** up as usual....

had hummed and hahed if i was going to brew weather forecast was crap..

But wrong...

have a sack of red x and thought ill give that a go...

10kg red x
kilo TW

hops changed from plan and used goldings ....50grms first wort (first time)
50 grams for boil..

heated 60 odd litres to 80 odd degrees

put 30 ish in tun started to dough in.....forgot to put false bottom in.....all out into a fermenter ....false bottom dropped in.

no worries was quite a bit too hot...(usually goes tother way)

then i over cooled it....low 60s and a full (nearly) 80 litre tun

heated more water...and batch sparged..

got far more wort than i needed

originally going for a 60 min boil...went for 90 and topped up about 40 mins in...

ended up with 50 litres between 2 fermenters..og lower than planned so i might actually have a session beer and thats a first..

time will tell

also bottled the last of my citra pale

over all a productive day.

shed looks like a bombs hit it....will be on mop duty and drying tomorrow night...
