The only thing I really know about laptops is that my one is ****, could this thing your speaking about help to speed it up a bit and how much is it ??

How old is your laptop? You might find it's just needing re-formatted. If you have Vista on it then it's definitely time to get rid of that and upgrade to windows 7. If it's running XP then I would just re-format with XP, as it's a cracking OS.

Reformatting involves wiping the computers HDD, so you need to be sure you have everything you need backed up. The format just takes windows back to the state it was in the day the laptop was bought. All the caching that windows does eventually leads to it slowing right down, the older versions were really bad for this and Vista was just a nightmare for it. Windows 7 is the first OS I've had from M$ that I haven't had to reformat every couple of months (I'm an extremely heavy user lol).

I always recommend a fresh reformat every 6 months to a year regardless of OS. This helps combat any speed issues as well as being sure all threats on the drive are gone (spyware, malware, viruses, etc).

Aye it's got xp on it, I've not got anything on it but brewing software, all my musics on an external hard drive, so how do I reformat it?

You need a windows XP installation disc. If you have one of those you are good to go.

When the laptop boots up you should see an option for "Setup" or something like that. It's usually F10, Del, Esc, F12, or something like that. Once in there you are looking for "Boot options", again something like that. You will have an option to select the "Boot order". This is simply the order in which the bios checks the devices in your laptop for bootable software. You want to set this to your CD/DVD-Rom.

The above simply tells the bios that you want it to check the CD/DVD drive for bootable software before checking the HDD etc. If you don't do this then it will most likely ignore what's in the DVD/CD drive and just continue to boot from the HDD. However, on the off chance that it DOES check the DVD/CD drive first just reboot the laptop with the disc inside. If it doesn't work you need to change the bios setting.

An alternative to the above is if you have a "boot options" option on the bios screen. If you have that, usually F8, you can simply chose the CD/DVD drive for just 1 boot which will suffice. Press F8 to get the options up then select CD/DVD drive.

Ok, that's the complicated stuff done, now for the easy part. Disc in, boot the laptop into the windows setup (does it automatically when you have done the above) and then allow it to load. Once loaded you will get to a screen that shows your harddrive and how much space it has. At this point it is CRUCIAL that you have backed up anything important. You want to delete every partition that's there. There will be an option to delete partition, do this for every drive that you can see (DO NOT HAVE ANY DEVICES PLUGGED IN OR YOU MAY WIPE THEM BY ACCIDENT). Once it's finished simply hit enter on the drive that is left. Windows will install onto this partition. Leave it to do it's thing and answer any mediocre questions along the way.

Once you are finished you will have a fully reformatted laptop. All you need to do now is make sure that all the drivers for your various hardware components are installed, any that aren't need to be downloaded and installed. You can get them from the website for your laptop brand simply by going to support and typing in the model number in the downloads section.

Bish bash bosh. It'll take about 1-2 hours from start to finish :)

Hay BB,
The norm is when booting linux having downloaded the .ISO - on switch on, you need to go into BIOS and set it up to ensure ensure that the boot order shows the DVD/CD first. Then having done that, on switch on the computer will boot from the DVD/CD and pick up the .ISO file(s).

Got something to run.... have I got the right one?? Linux mint????

Sorry John, was not able to get on the forum much yesterday. Linux Mint is not ZorinOS so it will be a bit more of a learning curve (i.e. it will not look like XP or Win7 unlike Zorin) - did you download by following the link I posted? - that should have got you Zorin not Mint. That said, Linux Mint is probably the next best thing for a newbie.

Tee-hee, done it.....
Thx guys.. :thumb: :thumb:
Going to stick with the mint to see how it goes...

BB

I've been using Mint for a while now.
It's not a bad distro, it doesn't have the constant changes of Ubuntu and is easier to set up for multimedia.

@BB,
I'd strongly recommend that you seek out and join the mint user forum. If its like puppy you'll find that many of the regularly used apps have been sightly modified to work better in Mint and they'll be available thru the forum. Its also a great source of support and help.

Good luck with it - its a bit like going over to the Dark Side - If you consider Windoze the light side????!!! :thumb: :thumb:

Always good to see another convert

Getting cocky now..... trying Ubuntu 12.10, any views on this or would I be better off going back to Linux Mint??

BB (IT expert)

Ubuntu is probably the best supported distro but is constantly being updated which is why when I upgraded I went to 12.04 LTS.
LTS is the long term support branch which will be supported for 5 years.
I like Ubuntu as it is Debian based which it what I have always used.
I only use it as a server OS though e.g. headless.

BB ( IT wizard)

its ubuntu i went for and i am slowly getting used to it although it seems to take forever when doing updates. and occasionally it does hand up for a few seconds which i didnt think it would. i havent gone as far as getting any programs for it yet as dont know where to start lol

Must say I have not tried Mint. :)
But for me Ubuntu just worked until it went to posie for me. Tried Xubuntu, nearly ubuntu but a nicer front end to me, on an old laptop and was so impressed converted ubuntu to Xubuntu on the desk top machine.
Its Ubuntu with new clothes. ;)
Have a look in "Ubuntu software center" on the menu, for softwear ;)

P.S. can't fall of here BB, its all free  . I did make an exception and bought Linux Beersmith, well worth the money. :thumb:
