I've never tried PuppyLinux yet :hmm: I have in the past used lubuntu to revive old machines but I think I'll give puppy a go too :thumb:

I have puppy on a memory stick, great tool for retrieving information from a machine, when the windows have fallen out. :D

I've tried various flavours of Linux and generally like them and get on with them, they are robust and as along as you set up the firewall correctly (a good idea for Windoze as well) and run some form of virus checker they are very safe (more so than windoze due to the % game), however, as a total war adddict I alwayss return to windoze as so far no flavour of Linux has the necessary emulator to run the total war series of games :( Apart from web browsing and brewing I generally only use my personal PC for gaming.

Last time I tried Mint it was in the process of moving over to Cinnamon and MATE so I'm not sure I was able to give it a fair go. I definitely could not get on with the Unity interface in Ubuntu though so xubuntu was nice to find.
Same here, I ended up putting the gnome desktop back on.

Hi there TRXnMe,
I've put a post on the PL forum to see if anybody knows if the
total war series of games
can/is being played on Puppy Linux.

Reply from the PL Forum for YRXnMe,
Hi,
I'm making this post on behalf of a friend - I don't know what the total war series of games is all about.
Does anybody know if Puppy supports this game or is it exclusive to Windoze?

You need Wine to play it on Puppy. Which games in the series, there is alot of them according to Wine's App database. Most of them are labeled as Garbage. Which means:

An application gets this rating if it cannot be used for the purpose it was designed for. There should be at least one bug report in Bugzilla if it gets this rating. Application cannot be installed, does not start, or starts but has so many errors that it is nearly impossible to use it.

Edit: I would just keep windows if I wanted to play a game

Yeah, I agree. The thing about puppy is that you can use it without ditching Windows. So your friend can just use puppy and boot windows for gaming.

You can even run puppy with your hard drive unplugged. I've done this to save wear on the HD and keep from overheating in the summer- and when I want to play a game I just plug the HD in and unplug my flash drive that has Slacko on it.

Here is some further info on Wine

For previous Wine .pets and lots of information, visit technosaurus's thread.

Listed in puppylinux wiki.

My other forum thread listing wine packages -> here

I did nothing clever in compiling Wine, I just followed the instructions/examples of others. Thanks go to them for providing the information, files, and work.

This post will point to new wine versions as I compile them.

Amazing! :ugeek: :hat:  :D
SWMBO makes me get out of bed early on a Saturday to let ours out.

You're lucky I have to feed, water and let ours out every morning.

At least I don't have to clean the little cluckers out though.

Thanks for asking, but I already knew TW wouldn't play under WINE, it's the sofware part of graphics accelerator (I think), there are two main types, one of them is an MS product (the one TW uses) and not surprisingly it's not got an equivalent under Linux. I'm a little vague on this as it's got to be around 3 years since I seriously tried so I've forgotten the exact details, it's just a shame the one and only game I enjoy playing wont run under what is really the best OS available.

If you want to play FPS then the ID software games used to have Linux specific releases to Linux isn't entirely terrible for gamers :)

I too am in the process of deciding whether to migrate away from Windows 64 bit XP :hmm: I have no allegiance to W and the link M supplied makes it look very easy for a W user to get to grips with. My main concern at the mo is whether our new printer (4 weeks) will be supported, it's a Kodak Hero 7.1 which doesn't support XP64 unless you contact their on-line support who will strip out certain aspects of the support programme so it will work

Any help much appreciated :thumb:

Vossy,
It is possible to get the Kodak printer working under Ubuntu but you have to have fair knowledge of Linux. Drivers are available from source forge.

I would dual boot, just install Ubuntu alongside windows.

From a quick check it looks like it is supported, easiest way to check is to download/burn a live dvd and test it from there, that way all you have lost is a 10p dvd.

That's me scuppered

Where did you find that info hb, the only os compatibility I could find was here and here :hmm: I'm downloading to burn as I type, thanks for the help guys :thumb:

If your printer is widely used, someone will either have written the driver, or be in the process of writing it.

I like Linux, my preference was Redhat, but most of them are easy to use compared to windoze of any variant, indeed Win 7 is suspiciously similar to my old Redhat installation :)

I'm going to try it, got Vista on a laptop and it's crap... Will ZorinOS make it betta??
What's 32 bit and 64 mean?? :wha: :wha:
BB

Zorin, which is Ubuntu based, will be better than Vista.

I know nothing about Zorin but I would recommended downloading a live CD of Ubuntu and check that your hardware is compatible, there,s a good chance it will be.

32 bit uses data in packets of 32 and 64 bit uses data in.......I'll let you work it out.

You can run 32 on a 64 machine but not vickyverky.

It's probably 32bit John but to check,
1) Click the start button
2) Right click on the "Computer" word
3) On the menu that pops up, click Properties
4) A page will be shown - look for "Operating System" and it will probably say 32 bit.

You can install Zorin (or any Linux) alongside Vista if you wish and then choose which to boot when you turn on. If you are sure you've had enough of Vista though and have backed up all your data, it is better to get the Linux installer to replace Windows entirely as you are giving it more space.

As titus said, you can run a "live" CD version to experiment before committing yourself. It will run a lot slower from the CD but you will get a feel for things.

ZorinOS 6.1 is now available. You can download it here. It is a pretty monsterous download though at 1.4GB and you need to burn it to a DVD once you have it downloaded. You need to be sure to choose the right burn option in your CD/DVD burning software to burn the image rather than the image file (if you burn the downloaded file to DVD it will not boot).

Have fun and let us know if you get stuck :thumb:
