Is it possible to use a party star tap on a golden hen keg from the supermarket

I'm pretty sure it is, as long as it's the black bung with the red middle. I have an easy keg that I bought from Brew Uk and I've managed to use my tap with the black and red bung so think it's the same.

Pull the vent top out and there's a stopper - push the tap through and the stopper will push into the keg the same as a mini keg.

The red bungs with a black middle like on the hobgoblin kegs can't.

Try soaking in boiling water if possible to soften the plastic bung.

I tried to emulate the technique in the video below. I do notice he refers to the bung as rubber and you say plastic so not sure if it's the same.

As above its really a pain in the backside to get one out of a hobgoblin cask. Took me over and hour and a lot of cursing before I had mangled the bung and got it out. Im hoping I can pick up a new bung online so it wasn't for nothing

Well it's easier to prepare and fill 4 mini kegs than 40 bottles. They're pretty popular, check out the thread in the equipment sub forum.

To get the hard plastic bung out all you need to do is use a sharp blade and do 4 slits in it and it becomes easy to pull out.

Yes. See the link to the massive thread above.

Basically, the gist of it is that the kegs don't handle high carbonation so it's more suited to cask style beers (I've bottled my wheat beer and steam beer but do 2-3 kegs and 10-20 bottles when I do other beer styles) but otherwise it's the same process just with less sugar.

I've seen these kegs in certain German supermarkets (full of fizzy lager - probably good stuff). I might get hold of one the next time they're in. Can you buy them empty, do you know?

You can buy them empty but they don't have a built in tap. You can buy a tap (e.g. party star) or make one http://www.instructables.com/id/5L-Mini-Keg-Tap/

Removed the bung but it fell inside, will it affect my beer if I reuse the keg with the plastic bung inside?
