I have just done a Tom Caxton Kit 2 weeks ago and instead of using sugar used Dark Spray Malt instead

I used 1.2 kg of malt and made the kit to 40 pints and the starting gravity was 1.075

then today I have bottled it and took a finishing gravity 0f 1.014

now using the calculator it says it is 8.2%

please tell me I've made a mistake and it isn't really that strong and if it is whats the chance it will be drinkable?

Mistake? Yeah, it will probably be rubbish. Send the batch to me for disposal.

Chances are that it will be perfectly ok. Not unlike a barley wine maybe? Don't chuck it whatever you do.

Just the spraymalt, or some sugar too?

As Ollie said, don't chuck it whatever you do, but with an OG like that you really should be leaving it 2-3 months before drinking, although earlier testing is obligatory.

I might be wrong here but i think the Tom Caxton kits are premium kits, (Was it a 2 can kit?) if it was a 2 can kit there wasnt any need to add sugar, which would explane your very high OG.
Also if you used the yeast that came with the kit you have done bloody well to get it down that low.

It was a single can kit and the only sugar added was the spray malt nothing else and used the yeast that came with the kit

I made it up and put it in a cupboard that stays at 20 degrees

It started fermenting and went like a train for about 4 days then stopped but I always try to leave for 14 days before touching it

ive just bottled a tom caxton best bitter,
a 1 can kit i thought it would be average stuff,as it was only £9.99 but having tested one last nite after it has carbonated for a week it was really good...i used 1.5 kg of sugar and it spent 20 days in the fv,

i will definatly be doing another as soon as i can get another kit....

we had a couple of litres an this morning my head was a bit :?

so im assuming it was a bit stronger than the 4.8 % suggested,

my first kit coming back to home brewing was a Tom Caxton dark real ale made with brewing sugar

Well that went down so fast the missus only got a couple :D

I had intended to do the same one but couldn't get one thats why I've tried the real ale kit

Next weekend I will be doing another so hope to get the dark ale or may get a premium kit

Maybe the OG reading was off? I've had a couple of kits where my first sample contained a little extra gunk that had settled in the bottom tap and affected the reading.

well after a week in bottles in the brewing cupboard
checked it to find its cleared lovely has a nice colour
so tried one of the 330ml bottles I always do as trial bottles

I think its a

nice dark taste and doesn't seem to strong still needs more time but not the disaster I was dreading
