I took SWMBO to see Kate Rusby in Buxton last night as an early birthday present. Kate was superb

Anyone else like a bit of folk

You want to talk to Peter at the Homebrew shop stockport, he plays folk banjo IIRC and is heavily into the scene, touring with his band round various pubs locally.
He's playing with a 15 piece band at Stockport beer fest.
Here's a link to a site listed on the HBS website.

When we used to live in Edinburgh and before the kids turned up SWMBO and I would regularly go to the pubs that had folk music. The Ceilidh House was a favourite as they just had musicians turn up and play - the Deuchar's IPA was very good too.

SWMBO knows it - she's from Edinburgh :thumb:

I like Deuchars

Did you ever try Gillespies? - I used to love that :thumb: - Would love to get a recipe

I went to a local "Unplugged" gig about 14-15 years ago and Show of Hands headlined. I'd obviously never heard of them but by the second song I thought they were great. I bought the CD's next time I went to the bar to make sure they didn't sell out.

Nice one Smod :thumb:

Never heard of them but like their sound. Roots is cool - Wez would appreciate the sentiment in the song

Yeah she's not bad. Missed her about 5 years ago when she came to Morecambe. She must have seen sense coz she's never been back.
Got 3 of her albums:-
Underneath The Stars
Little Lights
Awkward Annie.

Give Shooglenifty a try if your into folk music. There a lot more upbeat than Kate.

I do.

I'm not too keen on ultra-trad stuff or the "If the Carthy family don't play it it's not folk" brigade. I like a little Seth Lakeman and Bellowhead. Stuff from The Fence Collective might be worth a listen too if you haven't heard of King Creosote.

There's a rich tradition across the pond too although I don't know much about it beyond Nickel Creek, if you like virtuoso mandolin and voluptuous librarian-like fiddle players this video could be for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmW_b7QniR0
