Bodmas ALWAYS applies

Bodmas does not need to be written in the right order, Bodmas is there so you work out the order...

Quick test here, got a mobile phone?

My Samsung S3 built in calculator gets 12 as the answer, my built in PC calculator gets 18

I shall stick with the S3 calculator in future as it is correct

Yes,
25% of 100 is 25 which is maths
2x2 is 4 which is maths
3+3x3-3+3=12 it is maths, it obeys BODMAS
(3+3)x3-3+3=18 it is maths, it obeys BODMAS

And I shall use common sense to give up saying 18 is wrong!!

3+3+3x3-3=24

etc

As you can see from the above, the same equation gets 3 different answers.

Sorry Scott that's 3 DIFFERENT equations hence 3 different answers

Unless you want to include the 'Logic' of using Bodmas in the simple original sum

I started a degree in Stats, but never finished it. The 1970s for you there.
Before Google we used to look things up in The Whole Earth Catalog
That's where I discovered the calculus of indications in G Spencer-Brown's Laws of Form

Never heard of BODMAS before, I always thought the multiplication should be in brackets. I did get the answer wrong the first time I read the question but after reading the links Scott posted I get now why it's 12

I never got taught BODMAS (as far as I recall), I just got taught the correct order for applying things - I never did get on with mnemonics, found it easier to just remember stuff.

Yup mine too. I got it right when I first saw it but only, like oldbloke, because I knew to multiply first. I could just as easily have gotten it wrong. The comments that followed mentioned BODMAS, I couldn't really recall what it was so I looked into it and since then it's stuck lol.

I'm fairly certain I did, but it wasn't a big deal from what I remember. We were taught, like yourself, the order of things. BODMAS was probably in the lessons at the beginning but not referenced frequently enough for it to stick.

It's odd, I dunno why I remember it being called Bodmas, but it stuck, and since then, ermmm until the Internet appeared with the what does this equal, I doubt I have ever had to use it

The reason i remeber it is a little odd but we were taught taught about an American Indian called BODMAS

No idea why but the picture of it has stuck in my head and I follow it as a Rule/law of maths


ps the Iphone calculator is a bit useless however i get 12 when i put it in... in the correct order.
