Hi all,

So i made a booboo. I'd just finished my boil (in an electrim bin with a heating element at the bottom) and had to dash out for an hour.

yeah. I left the wort in the boiler.

So, my resulting wort is several shades darker than it should be and the heating element has a nasty black coating.

Should I put it down to experience or continue with the brew to see what I end up with?

cheers

John

go for it, just extra caramalised- i would taste the hydrometer sample though just incase, but should be fine

even if a bit burnt it will just have to be a stout lol

Ha - that was my thinking. The sample tasted fine and the gravity was spot on. How bad can it be? :)

As it happens, the colour is lightening already during the primary. I suspect the burned residue on the element is maybe settling proteins rather than the wort itself.

having a hard time getting it clean, though.

Carry on youve spent the time and money may as well finish the brew. The downside is a packet of yeast and the upside is you get a drinkable beer or even better.

Exactly so. i can't really complain - I've been brewing for about twenty years and it's at least fifteen since I made a serious cockup, so I'm due one :)

If you're still struggling with that residue on the heating element, try filling the bin with water until the element is fully covered and then throw in a couple of dryer sheets (you know, the type you can up in a tumble dryer to soften the clothes as make it smell nice). Leave over-night and then give it a scrub - should come of without problems! At least it works on dirty oven racks and trays!

oh! I'll give that a try!

So, it had a frighteningly fast fermentation - barely three days. I tasted the hydro sample and, frankly it's beautiful. No sign of any scorching and it has lightened quite a bit.

I'm a little confused but not going to lose any sleep over it :)

So I just kegged it and had half a bottle left over to sample. Out of all the weissen i've made in the last 20 years, this one is already sublime!

God knows how i'll replicate it.
