I'm just not happy

The increase in chemicals in our lives, from transport, the food chain and packaging. Also i reckon people dont sleep enough nowadays.

People are tired. Because of screens and the continuous impulses, or the lack thereof.

This concept of a well paid job or having a good job is farcical.

Any job is what you are forced to do to make money to pay the increasing demands put upon people either by the corrupt system or the dillusion that having more makes you happy.

Keeping up with jones is one of the biggest causes of debt and misery in peoples lives

Earn �£100 spend �£99 = happiness
Earn �£100 spend �£101 = misery

Just �£1 makes all the difference

My personal opinion on the subject (not a popular one) is that the majority of “depressed” people just have a crappy outlook on life. There are the same amount of people “clinically depressed” (medication for imbalances) or genuinely “troubled” e.g. abused etc. The rest feel sorry for themselves because they can’t live the lifestyle they see on strictly come xfactor housewives of big brother.

I've never wanted it all or the x factor lifestyle, just to be able to do a good job whatever I do and not be too materialistic. In times of severe stress I took up cycling, brewing and writing. as a result I have a lot of nice beers 2 knackered legs and a book to my name. The original reasons for the stress have been since dealt with but my new hobbies have kept me in a good place. I even stopped the 9-5 commute and swapped for a crazy (but good)shift pattern, but no more stuck in commuter traffic jams although i have to avoid school run traffic around 3pm on my days off.

This work during the week for the weekend cr*p was getting increasingly disillusioning as it meant shopping with every other tom dick and charlie and often taking a good hour or so to out of the retail park.

Heck I even have time to arrange the odd impromptu competition.

Nice plug. I work a crazy shift pattern to most people but I love it, I get my days with my daughter so my wife can work and it really suits us. It is very easy to say “I’m depressed” because you’ve been thrown a couple of curve balls. It’s what my parents called a “tough day”.

I haven't read the article (will have a look later) but my take on the subject is people (especially men) are now far more likely to talk about depression rather than bottle it up and keep quiet like us males of a certain age did in the day.

Brother suffers with it and even had a little relapse a few weeks ago at a family do.

He has a nice partner two kids a well paid job and a nice house

He has always been a bit of a perfectionist though and I think somewhere he has developed a warped perfect unrealistic vision of what should be life which ultimately makes him deeply unhappy with himself.. this is no expert opinion just an angle I have on him.

I think a large part of more cases could also be attributed to people speaking out about it more and being more aware of it too..

I think Dexter is right with the whole sleep thing aswell.

I think having two kids and a wife who has to look after those kids is the source of depression for many men. Who are probably dreaming of another younger wife without kids and a good job.

For people around my age 45, I think the widespread use of ecstasy back in the late 80's early 90's may be a factor.

You could be right mate, I must admit to being at many “raves” and I took substantial amounts of ecstasy and speed in the early 90’s , makes you feel like crap after it and long term effects are unknown.

I think the change in employment over the last 30-40 years has had an influence. Many people these days don't see a tangible end product in their work, be it something physical they have made, or satisfied customer at the end of a face to face interaction. And, I think the rise in creative hobbies like brewing, baking and even things like adult colouring books are the result of people looking for a solution to this. I know a fair few people who have quit well paid jobs, to work longer hours for less money, in their own cafes, bars, shops, and appear happier for it.

Absolutely right, in my case at least. I used to be a dental technician so made bespoke appliances from start to finish. Rewarding, fascinating, creative and never boring. Ended up doing something completely different for reasons I won't bore anyone with - more money but terrible hours and incredibly stressful. Difficult and not boring but the items are made by a machine which I have programmed. Things are soon to change, hopefully. Will actually feel like getting my life back. Mind you, I've always been a brewer, whatever I was doing for a living!

Mine that can hit me hard sometimes, is just the shear amount of crap that gets flung my way. It didn’t bother me when I was young because I knew life is hard and we have to pull ourselves up by the belt. But as I got older I realized that people just love making issues and what was going on was a kind of business warfare. Now it seems like any movement I make, there’s someone out there that’ll come banging on my door to take a piece. It first appears like they want to team up, join the company, try to be a part of it and sell it to you like they have the same passion. Sometimes you catch it with little damage to the company. But it takes that one time when a shark gets in and just shreads everything. This happened and it took ten years in courts, too much money to even believe. And during the course you find out you life partner who you’ve been with for 17 years really has never cared for your well being.
There’s a little light. If I would have curled up and hid away, I wouldn’t have met my current wife. She’s wonderful and was lucky to have been born to a family with means and who taught her to save and work hard. But ever so often, like last week, another sucker calls and the lawyers are brought in. Got a meeting with them on Monday on an old friend who thinks he can squeeze money out of me. Might I add that I’m in a country that loves foreigners as English teachers only. Beyond that, that believe you shouldn’t be here. And since I’ve lived here for more that 2 decades, many think I’ve worn out my welcome. They hate the fact that I own my own house (that was a nightmare to buy).
Also, they took my license away for 2 years because my regular license in Japan is for cars only, but my American license along with a current international license is for large bikes. I wrecked my bike 2 years ago and had to have 5 operations to fix everything. When I got out of the hospital, the told me I broke the law since foreigners living here can’t use international licenses. So, it’s been fun. Haha
Off topic? But that’s what hits me hard. Just the waves of stuff that comes. Don’t even want to move sometimes.

I used to believe what Warren Buffet used to say, 'We're all born equal' but we are not, and depression is one of the things that most people can't grasp. My wife suffers with anxiety, (got worse when she married me) no matter how many times I tell her not to worry about anything until it happens, she will still worry, and she will always take a pessimistic view. Some people can handle with ease what comes their way others can't, we are all different.

You can be as prophetic and philosophical as you want about mental health. It is a problem for a lot of people no doubt, and I really hope the people that require the help get it. My point was there are hundreds, if not thousands of people who access help intended for those who require it due to genuine anxiety/mental health issues purely because they haven’t got enough about them to pick themselves up after a small knock down.

Cells don't necessarily replicate perfectly, the faults in the replication are what cause ageing.
As much as it's nice to believe that there is a better place after we die, it is utterly improbable.
Evolution is the best explanation we have and with all the supporting evidence, it is as factual as the earth not being flat.

An interesting thread. I have seen the effects of depression and anxiety at first hand twice. Once when a close friend suffered from panic attacks a few years back after a family bereavement and secondly after my brother lost his job. The medical response to both was to prescribe 'happy pills', but like many medical solutions, these seem to treat the symptoms rather than the cause.

Before their issues both could be the life and soul of the party and you will often read of thrill-seekers and performers suffering mental health problems as they become dependent on the adrenaline rush they receive when performing and struggle with the lows in between.

Maybe our bodies and brains just haven't been able to evolve as quickly as modern life evolves, so we trying to survive in the computer age with caveman brains.
