After a lot of reading it would seem I could make a small one from sand and clay...

Worth a punt if its cheap/free.

An advantage of cob/clay is that you can build them small. I know someone who has one about 2ft in diameter. The pizze he makes in them are the size of digestive biscuits, but they can taste good (when he doesn't insist that pizze can be wholemeal.)

I wouldn't expect a cob oven to last much longer than a year (less with a cold/damp British winter), and small ones are pretty poor at making bread in because they lack thermal mass. Pretty much all of what the Italians call 'al forno' cooking is not possible in them. I cook Xmas lunch in mine every year, and have cooked a whole 30kg pig/porchetta (which took 7 hours and was frikkin' amazeballs.

The other advantage of cob/clay is that you can build one cheaply, discover whether you use it sufficiently, or whether it's just a fad, and then if necessary go on to build a proper 'forno.'

Thats the one Tim :thumb:

Actually I will add that to my list along with the veg patch and six pack.

...and tell SWMBO that the hobbit-hole is the cost of not being allowed to play golf or tow a caravan.
