I've done a beer kit as instructed. I used a Demi John instead of a bin and it seems like there is a thick layer of the malt extract stuck at the bottom. Do you think it will eventually dissolve into the water or will I have a weak tasting beer. It's a day into fermentation so don't really want to disturb it

I'm assuming its a 5Gallon DJ that you have your kit in? Most kits make 23L/5Gals.

What stage is the brew at? Have you pitched yeast and is the yeast working? If the answer to this is yes, then what I suggest you do is carefully stir the brew with a long paddle or the back end of said paddle or sanitizable stick of some sort.

Try not to introduce too much air into the brew as air at this stage in the life of yeast will/might kill it. This should get the Malt.

If the yeast is not and has not been working then give it a good swirl and get the malt suspended in the liquor. You will now need to pitch some more yeast to get it going. To do this I suggest you do a yeast starter with some of the wart in a clean and sanitized bottle used boiled and cooled water to get the mixture to about 24Deg C once you have set up the starter liquid then add the yeast and cover it with tin foil to keep any nasties out. Once it is bubbling away happily then pitch the whole into the DJ with the wart in it. Hopefully this should then take off and produce a bubbling/foaming brew.

Good luck!

If it's only a day in then I'm sure that you can give the DJ a light swirl to disturb the sediment on the bottom. You just want to avoid excess splashing which would introduce oxygen into the mix: in a DJ with a narrow neck and an airlock, this is not likely to happen easily. Go for it.

Yh it's in a 5 gallon demijohn and 1 day into fermentation. The problem I have is my stirring spoon isn't long enough to reach the bottom  what else could I use

Man strength! Just hold the demi john and give it a few gentle rocks to lift the sediment.

It's 8.30 my man strength went ages ago  I've found a long stainless steal stick. I'm going to clean it an then I'm going in. Wish me luck
