Today I made up a sugar solution of 75g in 1L of water. Both hydrometers have a scale to measure amount of sugar per L
It is clear which hydrometer is out. Thanks for all of your responses.

This obvious approached hadn't occurred to me! :laugh8: I tend to ignore everything on the hydrometer except the actual reading.

But sure, my hydrometer is the same. I just made up 37.5 g in 500 ml of sugar solution, and it comes spot-on the '75 g per litre' mark. Which is good enough for me to convince me that there's no gross errors with my hydrometer (I never thought there was, really).

Did same - 37.5g in 500ml 👍🏻
was really annoying as the at fault hydrometer was bought last week to verify the (now known) correct one. I was getting low mash efficiencies and looking to blame something -when it’s actually just my process 🙄

At least now you know, you've eliminated one possibility. I was/am in a similar boat with disappointing recent efficiencies. But not the end of world; you can make allowances for it. I like the sound of that narrow range hydrometer, though. Although a quick Google suggests you've got pay over 30 quid for one.
