Hi guys, I'm planning my fourth BIAB brewing on gas on Friday and just shacked the 6kg bottle and I'm a paranoid about how much gas I have left.
I know it will vary on different set ups but roughly how much gas do you use?
I know it would be ideal to have a back up bottle but they ant cheap.
Cheers
John

I asked a similar question a few wks back...the responses I got led me to believe you'd get just under 1 brew per kilo. I bought a 13.5kg propane tank and so expect to maybe get one brew a month out of that, replacing my tank once a yr

I did think maybe 1 kilo sounded about what you would want to get.
Also I was wondering about filling my pot from the hot tap in the kitchen to save on gas.

I wouldn't. But only because I'd be worried what nasties the water had picked up being swished around my hot water system. Probably illogical as I know it would all get boiled off anyway later but, for me, I'd just not be able to get over the cringe of thinking that the water isn't "pure" as it is through the cold tap.

I have a 13kg one

So far I done 7 brews with it, I dont have a spare as such and do maybe worry about it running out, however we do have a patio gas tank for the BBQ and I have a reglator so in the event of emergency ill just change the regulator and get going again..

1KG per brew is an interesting quote.. I will have to keep an eye on that number..

You can save a bit by when you have a good rolling boil turn it down a bit so it still boils well

Cheers

my hot water is a bit back to front, I have a big tank of hot water with basically a wort chiller going through it so I get mains pressure water bit like a combi.
We run the house on wood pellets so its all a bit different!

Slightly more than 1kg used per brew (from what I could gather from reports of others)

Hi!
If it's a sunny day, put your brewing water out in the sun in a lidded FV - you'll be amazed how hot it gets.

so simple great, I'm doing an American wheat beer after work tomorrow, so recon if I fill my FV tonight and leave in the conservatory for the day it will be up there by the time I get home. And you read about leaving your water to stand can get rid of chlorine. Win win.
Thanks

I think I did eight from one six k bottle. Which included roughly 20-30mins getting to mash temp, then 70mins getting to boil and boiling. So about 100-120 mins use per boil. Not sure what rating the regulator / burner is (or even if 'rating' is the right word).

So if you've done three you should, be fine.

Trick is to always have two!

Don't try and use propane outside though unless you have a good shield, any breeze will mean it takes an eternity, if ever, to get to boil.
