With my current brew 'Way to Amarillo' about to be bottled my thought is now going to my next batch.
I found an Extract clone of HobGoblin by the Home Brewer Orfy. This was dated back a few years.

I also thought that before I did a brew completely from scratch it probably was a wise idea to get a feel for Steeping Grains.

Brew Type: Extract | Batch Size: 18.93L | Boil Volume: 9.19L | Boil Time: 60 min

Ingredients
0.17 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain
0.15 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain
0.09 kg Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM) Grain
3.48 kg Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) *
62 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%]
62 gm Fuggles [4.50%]
1 Pkg Nottingham (Danstar) Yeast

* I've slightly edited the Pale malt extract, as I buy most of my ingredients from The Home Brew Shop light malt extract comes in 1.5kg tins so I will order 2 tins (making 3kg) and sub the .48kg as dried malt extract. This isn't a simple like for like swap as dried malt extract is more concentrated than liquid so a simple calculation is in order.
This is DME = 0.84 * LME - based on this recipe I would need to multiply 0.84 by 0.48 (quantity of malt extract left) which equals 0.4032 (or essentially 400g of DME)

Instructions
-- Add water to achieve boil volume of 9.19 L
-- Steep grains (see below) for 30mins at 65oC

0.17 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain
0.15 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain
0.09 kg Chocolate Malt (450.0 SRM) Grain

-- Estimated Pre-boil Gravity is: 1.115 SG with all grains/extracts added
-- Remove grains and add extract
-- Bring to boil (making sure DME is completely mixed with no lumpy bits) then add hops

3.48 kg Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract
25 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (60 min boil) (First Wort Hop)
25 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (60 min boil) (First Wort Hop) Hops

30 min into boil Add 25 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (30 min boil)
30 min into boil Add 25 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (30 min boil)
At end of boil , remove from heat and add 12 gm Fuggles [4.50%] (Aroma Hop-Steep)
At end of boil, remove from heat and add 12 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (Aroma Hop-Steep)

-- Cool wort to fermentation temperature
-- Add 11.36 L water (as needed) to achieve volume of 18.93 L
-- Siphon/strain/transfer wort to primary fermenter and aerate wort
-- Add 1 Pkg Nottingham (Danstar #-) Yeast-Ale
-- Measure Original Gravity: (Estimate: 1.056 SG)

-- 14 days Ferment in primary at 20.0 C (original Orfy recipe states to rack into secondary but I have increased primary accordingly)
-- Measure Final Gravity: (Estimate: 1.013 SG)
-- Bottle beer at 15.6 C with 97.0 g of dried malt extract.
-- Age for 3.0 Weeks (1st week fermenting temperature then reduce to 15.0 C

This will be estimated as 5.6% so slightly higher than commercial Hobgoblin and will be in the region of about £1.20 so defiantly cheaper than the draft version and slightly cheaper than supermarket bottles.

£1.25 a bottle in Tesco's

It's not the same stuff though, is it - it's just branding. Quite often the bottled and cask versions of beer are different strengths, made in different places e.g. Sharps Doom Bar cask is brewed in Cornwall but the bottles are brewed in the Midlands.

The reason I started homebrewing was because most bottled beer tasted nothing like it's cask equivalent.
