Hey all,

I got a homebrew book for Xmas and have tried out one of the recipes for strawberry beer (I've scaled it down from 5gal to 1gal to trial it first)

The recipe calls for 700g of strawberries to be added on day 4 of fermentation. After straining and mashing all the liquid from the strawbs I boiled it for 5 mins and cooled before adding to the fermenter.

What I'm not sure on is how this will have affected the gravity...like an ***** I didn't take a reading before & after adding the strawberries. According to the label there are 6.1g of sugar per 100g, so looking at about 43g of additional sugars added.

My OG was 1.036, is anyone able to work out roughly what difference the strawberries will make to the final abv? Assuming I finish around 1.010

100g of sugar in a litre of water would result in an OG of 1.038, an increase of 38 gravity points.

So 43g of sugar in a gallon (4.54 litres) would result in an increase in OG of (38*43)/(100*4.54) = 3.6 points, i.e. approx 1.040. (Assuming all the sugar made it into the wort)

If you hit 1.010 FG, this will give you (1.040-1.010)*131.25 = 3.9 % ABV

Amazing! Thankyou so much, the recipe says it should end up about 3.8% so good to know I won't be far off
