hi, i am new to home brewing and have a question that no doubt will be obvious to the more skilled beer producers amongst you.

i have a coopers cerveza beer kit and with the instructions for starting it says.......
"dissolve contents of can and other fermentable sugars with 2 litres of boiling water"

but doesn't say how much sugar to use, if any.

am i also right in thinking that not all kits need sugar adding???

if this is true then when putting it into a barrel do i still need to add sugar?? if so how much???

so confusing for a new and very eager guy. :thumb:

 Hi Graham, most Coopers kits take 2k of sugar. If you look on the instructions usually under WELCOME it should tell you the requirments. You are right about some kits not needing sugar, but Coopers generally do.
I think it's about 2oz of sugar to a barrel :thumb:

Most coopers kits use one kilogramof sugar/dry malt extract (Lager styles should use sugar ;)) . . . .

Whoa! The Cooper's kits I've brewed needed 1kg of sugar.

And yes, you're right, some kits don't need sugar. They are usually the 3kg, two-tin kits.

firstly, thanks to all that replied....

i have also been advised (by a friend of a friend) to use 500g light dry malt plus 250g of sugar OR 1kg of brew enhancer

does this sound correct???

would it really make that much difference if i just used sugar??

thanks once again

If you are prepared to pay attention to me after my earlier c*ck-up  I would stick to sugar untill you have a few brews under your belt, then begin to experiment :thumb:

Stick with ordinary granulated sugar.

For ales, then you can try the ‘enhancer’ or perhaps 500g spraymalt, 600g sugar.

Hi Graham,

Yea id agree with the above I used the light Malt Extract on the Coopers Lager kit i did a while ago now and to be honest I wasnt impressed with the finish it didnt taste like lager more of a beer taste to it ...I put it down to the malt extract but I also read that lagers need to be fermented at much lower temperatures however i dont think that'll work with the generic coopers yeast as supplied

Also to confirm it is 1kg of sugar :thumb:

Agree with Moley and Aleman, use normal granulated sugar. Anything else for a lager is far too expensive and there is no real difference in taste. On the other hand, if you was looking for a strong stout I would go for dark spraymalt  .

There's plenty of help available to anyone who asks for it, and occasionally we may even agree with eachother ;)

im in the process of making my coopers draught kit and i used 'coopers brew enhancer 1', which is 1 kg, instead of sugar, I have ordered the cerveza kit which should be delivered tomorrow, let us know how it goes mate

I'm sure I hit the space bar but it can't have registered. ;)
Shouldn't your own sentence carry a question mark?

I cry foul, should it not be 'each other'. Sorry I couldn't resist despite what Merriam-Webster claims.

Ohh here it comes.

Back on post, I`ve brewed coopers lager kits with 1kg sugar and after being bottle conditioned for six weeks they are not bad for the price :thumb:
