Cool cheers guys I've never enjoyed a beer as much as ones made myself. Can't wait to be able to say I really made it chose the ingredients brewed it fully a unique beer that's all mine. And then it only cost .35p a pint. [emoji108]

One last question for now. The father in law is old Londoner. Drinks light and bitter and idea how to make light ale.

You just need the right recipe and there are some in Graham Wheeler's books, I'll dig it out.

Whitbread Light Ale in 1933 had an OG of 1028, and was 86% pale malt and 14% crystal. The hops will have been Goldings or Fuggles and IBU's around 20. Something like:

Batch Size (L): 20.0
Original Gravity (OG): 1.028
Final Gravity (FG): 1.007
Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 2.75 %
Bitterness (IBU): 21.2 (Average)

2.055 kg Maris Otter Malt (86%)
0.335 kg Crystal 145 EBC Medium (14%)

20.0 g East Kent Golding (5.7% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes
10.0 g East Kent Golding (5.7% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes

S04/Nottingham/Gervin yeast should all be pretty suitable.

Grain should keep for a good while if stored airtight and cool. It needs to be as dry as possible. Uncrushed grain keeps a lot longer than crushed, but crushed shoujd be fine for six months I reckon, but the fresher the better. I would try to use crushed grain within 3 months myself.

The light ale is a very cheap recipe. At that OG I reckon S04 probably better than Nottingham. I'd maybe raise the OG a bit myself, to 1030-35, with a bit more grain. You need to know what mash efficiency you expect to get.

The truth is I wouldn't have the faintest idea what efficiency. I'm guessing trial an error. But I'm cool with that. I agree OG higher. How much extra grain?

More grain and more hops:

3 kg Maris Otter Malt
500 g Crystal

30.0 g East Kent Golding Pellet (5.7% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes
15.0 g East Kent Golding Pellet (5.7% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes

Ok gonna order them tomorrow as they will last until Santa brings the gear. also if I order 10kg I will find a decent recipe for English bitter just a best bitter to begin with. Cheers guys sure there will be many more questions along the way

I would just like to say thanks I spent this afternoon in the kitchen and enjoyed every part of this process, learnt a great deal even though it's my first ag. Hit my target but had to boil longer than expected to get correct values so well chuffed pictures to follow tomorrow thanks, Wayne ps I would urge anyone to have a crack at this and I am so looking forward to my first pint, Atb Wayne

Thanks for your help and will enjoy trying new things, going to get my head round this recipe so I fully understand what changes do what I ended up going higher with the roasted barley so looking forward to how it tastes, thanks again Wayne

Very interesting reading the last few posts on this, and tempted to say the least at having a shot, and comparing the grain to kits that i have been doing.Any pictures of equipment would be useful,i know your just saying large pans on a stove, but pics would be helpful.

Thanks for that information, once my brick workshop is cleared out i think ill give it a go,it seems pretty straight forward with the muslin bag method,i would love to be able to make a Bass or Pedigree burton ale type beer.
