it's a John Bull kit IPA with 2kg of "normal" Tate & Lyle granulated sugar. Also my pal placed fruit from Tesco in a bowl, boiled the bowl for a bit then mashed ingredients down a little (strawberries, blackberries and raspberries), so we anticipated strong

I'm not sure what the instructions are on that kit but at first glance 2kg of sugar is a lot to add to a kit.

That hydro reading could well be correct.

Have you checked it in water at the correct calibration temp?

Stick the hydro in plain water at 20c. Should read 1000 if not then it has gone duff

With all that sugar that is a realistic FG. But you may want to correct your reading by the amount the hydrometer is out in room temp water.
