hi wilfy. were abouts are in the north east?
if im in consett wetherspoons they sell different ales for less than £2 a pint. had some nice ones too. :thumb:
Pretty well all the real ales in Wetherspoons down here are now around £2.75 pint

Cool chart Gareth, i brew because its become compulsive. Cheers :thumb:

I brew for all manner of reasons. Saving money is not one of them.

The charts were mainly to alleviate the boredom of a conference call inter office billing processes. Literally anything was more interesting. Though it did get fun after a bit.

Actually I think one of the reasons I brew is cos it's fun hanging out here talking sh*te and sharing pointless graphs with you idiots (which I use as a term of endearment)

I brew because I f*cking love it now. It's ace.

I come here and take the piss out of you monkeys because that's just what I do to everyone I know.... I'm a right pita. Haha.

Gods country - Sunderland. Can't knock a spoons for a value pint.

You cannot surely be referring to The William Jameson... It's like Mos Eisley in there. Everyone who used to go to the Jacobean now goes there or that Yates over the road.

Is that a Yates wine lodge? Are they still a thing? I'd have thought they died out with the nineties

There are some great points here to the cost of going to pub etc. And I am a firm believer that it's worth paying for a hobby. Whilst it's really interesting to track the costs (I am a data analyst after all), I don't know any homebrewer who brews to save money.

I have family in Cardiff, so I end up there a lot a i think the Ernie Willows on City Road is the cheapest pub I've ever been into. It's a spoons so good cask ale with the standard craft range and more you get at every spoons. There's also the hop bunker which is good value for money and the City Arms. Sometimes it's cheaper to get a return National Express than to drink in my home town!

So I was bored on a conference call and the other grainfather thread got me thinking about relative costs. So to see where a GF pays for itself vs buying beer in the pub or shop I put together a chart.

Now I'm crap with Excel and couldn't fathom how to label the axis but the vertical axis is total spend in £.

The horizontal axis shows total no. of pints.

I've assumed:
£3.50 a pint in the pub
£1.50 a bottle in the shop. (I'm ignoring the size difference between a 500ml bottle and a pint.)
£600 for GF
£15 per brew on ingredients (haven't factored in utilities, give me a break)

What it shows is the GF pays for itself after roughly:
180 pints vs pub (so 5 full length brews)
520 pints vs shop (so 13 full length brews)

If anyone can be bothered to give me their equipment set up costs I can add them in.

This reminded me of a web meeting I was on the other week. I was sharing my screen with the group at the time with about 7 or 8 people. While I was sharing, I got one of those Outlook pop ups with a the title "The Homebrew Forum - Private Message Received". I got a few mickey taking questions, fortunately it was only people I know well anyway.

I've also had my pc connected to a projector in a meeting and while flicking between Excel documents, I flicked past a recipe one that I had open. Thankfully I'm a boring ******* and nobody was paying any attention anyway.

Whilst I don't really brew to save money, there's no way I've be able to afford the amount of beer/HB I now drink if I bought it from a pub/supermarket

Haha! It's always funny when that happens. I was doing an internal presentation to my colleagues and bosses, I took some screenshots without realising I had my Google Play Music tab open, was listening to the Butthole Surfers. Had some interesting questions from the MD at the end...

Jamo's is a fine pub! One of the other spoons, the lambton worm, is up for sale. There's a newish bar open now where the people barred from spoons, Yates and sinatras go. It's called Joseph's and it's quite possibly the worst bar ever. Apart from the black garter out the back of eldon square.

Be great if that question was "Which is a better album, "locust abortion technician" or "psychic.....powerless.....another mans sac"? "[emoji1]

I LOVE the Black Garter haha, it's a total dive and doesn't pretend it's not.! Where's this Joseph's like, I've not seen that one? I bet it's no worse that that hole on Blandford St.

It's on Holmeside diagonally across from sinatras. You get stopped by the shoplifters on the way in trying to sell you cheese, bacon and Lynx. Blandford is marvellous in comparison.

Yes that's a valid argument. The cost per pint of homebrew may be much cheaper but there's no way I'd have nearly 200 bottles of shop bought beer in my house...

False economy!
