Yeah I would say 99% of the time I take my glass back to the bar, there is the odd occasion when I'm in a hurry that I might not but I usually do. Having worked in many a bar myself I always appreciated it when people did this, so I feel that I should do it as well :)

Definitely yes. I does no harm to walk back with a glass. But I am afraid the ' that's what the staff are paid for' attitude is yet another example of how bad this country has got. Just my opinion.

What dose a glass collector do if we all take them back, he go's to the job center :D

you tuck his JOB!

Surely by the fact that you are on a home brew forum and looking at your signature

You probably don't go in pubs as much as perhaps you once did. So you too and every other person actively brewing and not going into a pub is also making the pot washer redundant..............................................

and the bar man, bar manager, dreyman, head brewer, the brewers dog................................

Do I need to go on.....................

The reason for my comment was like a lot of people on here I have worked in bars myself and there is nothing worse than having to tidy up after every bugger. It is a sad fact that people have this attitude to rely on someone else and not make an effort themselves or help someone out a little.

I rarely get the opportunity. Normally if I go for a pint it's at lunchtime or during the afternoon/early evening, when my locals tend to be quiet and the barman/maid is often looking for work to keep themselves busy. I'm often first to finish, so my glass is normally collected long before the next round is ordered.

If a pub needs a potman to collect glasses that needs to be paid for somehow and that means extra pennies on your pint!

Always take it back.

And if I'm passing a table where some bugger's left their's then I'll take those back as well.

if its quiet and local yeah. always get a chat when i do
weatherspopons probably not unless im passing on the way out of the door

old habits here aswell, Ex bar staff for many years
its nice people care about there surroundings

if my wife and friend have finished and im heading to the bar i take theres aswell

if you treat a place like a **** hole it will quickly become a **** hole

He serves beer, as he was employed to do.
Not always, some pubs (used) to employ pot collectors, they were/are not bar men/women.

I was that potman!

So for me it depends very much on the pub and prevailing conditions. A busy Saturday night in a ***** "out with other people" pub, highly unlikely. A pint in a proper pub, you know a real pub, always.

Nope, a potman is (oh wait, minimum wage, WAS) paid less than a barman, therefore the pub SAVED money by having one by not using "expensive" bar staff who were there to sell, not clean. The potman also emptied ashtrays, cleaned tables, made a couple of quid on the side fetching for the hen and stag parties etc.

And a good potman was worth the money by keeping a tidy front of house, and just being around and knowledgeable and friendly and also keeping a close eye on "people issues" as the door staff can't be everywhere at once.

Big up the potmen!!!

Yes. Force of habit from working as a bartender for 2 years. I usually take any other empties from the table too.

It's also one of those little things that get you noticed by the bar staff at a busyish bar, getting noticed means getting served quicker:)
Exactly as HM said :thumb:

Unless it's a particularly nice glass and bar prices were excessive, in which case they've been known to accidentally fall into my coat pocket

If the price is excessive, that just means the price for the glass is included. I 'purchased' quite a big collection of glasses this way :D

i dont condone theft :nono:

yes and always ask for a fresh glass as some of my locals are happy to serve you all night with the same one

I always take my glass back, and I will happily let them fill mine back up if I am drinking the same beer. It's not like I wash my glass between beers at home, so why when out :wha:

I normally take the glasses back to the bar, but if it's a very nice glass I take it a bit further - - - - maybe my house..... ;)
Especially if it's £3.00+ a pint cos that includes the drinking vessel F.O.C. :thumb:

As for McDonald's I always remove the rubbish, it's only courteous because as soon as you get up another family sit down and why should they move my waste... It pisses me off when I see it.. Grrrrr

My friend and I were in a pub in Cambridge recently and I recall two halves coming to just over £7, with no prior warning from the barman (we'd already sampled several pints of more reasonably priced ale by this point). Needless to say, after paying that much for them, we definitely came to the conclusion that the glasses were complimentary!
