Hello,

As I said on my previous thread I was going to ask about brewing out of date kits..

As the title says, I have 2 out of date Coopers Wheatbeer kits. The date on the tin is August 2014. I presume the yeast is no good and I have bought some Safbrew wheat yeast to use instead. But.. is there any reason why I cant use the tins? Will the extract be OK - or at least taste reasonable?

Thanks for your thoughts - I have 2 tins of this (both the same date) and I dont want to waste them if I can at all help it.

Santino.

It'll be drinkable. Personally I'd do a two tin batch to 23 litres with your new yeast. I'd maybe also chuck in both the kit yeasts too. Basically all you'll be losing is the bought yeast if it all goes pear shaped ;-)

Thanks for the info Stesmi. What is the advantage of brewing both tins together? Will it improve the flavour - or do you think that as the tins are out of date it has a better chance of making something that will be ok!

I have some wheat spraymalt that I was going to use too.

Both mate. You'll usually add another fermentable like Brewing sugar, Dry Malt Extract (spray malt), Liquid malt extract or a combination of each to a tin kit. So to save money on your other fermentable (just in case the cans are off) just use the other can as your other fermentable. If it all goes pear-shaped then you'll have saved your wheat spray malt. All being well, it'll taste great too. Many people do a double can kit and say it tastes better.
