I put on a Coopers Stout yesterday, brewed with Ikg of Youngs Brew Enhancer, 250 gms of light brown caster sugar and I used Wilko's Gervin Yeast. I got an OG of 1050 and I started getting activity in the air lock about six hours after I'd pitched the yeast. Today it's trying to blow the lid off my FV, I've had to crack the lid of the FV to stop it blowing, the airlock is having the water blown out of it every 20 mins. It's only 24 hours old and it's a bit of a monster, If I can keep it contained I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. If anyone's done a Coopers Stout or has had this with any kind of stout do you have any idea how long it keeps up the psyco in the FV malarky?

Thanks for that Chippy, I ordered the tubing today on Ebay. For the moment I'm just cracking the lid of the FV and covering it with folded kitchen roll and keeping an eye on it but I'd sleep a lot easier if I had the blow off tube. It's funny my last couple brews have been really quiet and this one's gone mental.

the blow off tube will need to be fed into a plastic bottle half filled with water to act as an airlock, well a giant airlock

I just cover the end of the tube with about an inch of water, the more space in the container for the overflow from the FV the better.

Thanks all, I think I'll have the blow off tube in place the next time I put a stout on. It's all calmed down now with a bubble in the spigot every now and then.

I tried one of these over the weekend about four months after bottling. It's a lovely beer, it's really matured nicely. Since this Stout I've done another two, on my second I added hops and coffee to the FV and I have to say that I prefer the depth of flavour the coffee and hops bring to the party. However this Coopers Stout just out of the tin with BE added shows what a great template the Coopers Stout is and you can flavour it as you like it. I must admit I've always preferred the more bitter stouts so the coffee and hops are right up my street.

Cooper Stout brewed today, OG:1066, using Mauribrew trub to re-pitch, blowoff tube fitted in expectation of the arrival of the big brain at some point in the next 24hrs.

Every time I viewed the picture it was the right way up, I post it and and it's sideways maybe it's got something to do with the 1L of TC I just had on top of the mandatory John Bull IPA and Youngs Harvests Lime lager that I had to drink during the brew day.

I have just done a coopers stout with 250dsm, 200msm,170lsm and 380 brewing sugar. Think i only did it to 20l and it went nuts for about 4 days. Have given up worrying about the blow outs as nothing has got infected so far. I just change it when its calmed down.
Have you tried the St Peters Stout and if so how do you think it compares? My Mrs prefers the coopers as she says its less "coffee dregs".
Has anyone tried it with vanilla and chocolate? Seen a video on youtube and it does sound very tasty.
