going to do a coopers lager kit, i was thinking of doing it with 2kg brewing sugar i want it to come out around 5%abv. do you think this would do the trick, thanks for any advice.

 andy

The european lager or standard one? I assume it wants you to add 1kg sugar.

Use two 1kg brew enhancers instead of 2kg sugar possible. That much sugar will annihilate the body of the beer and leave it thin and bitter, possibly with a cidery taste. Really not worth it for the price of a pub pint when you could have 40 pints of top notch beer!

With two enhancers, if it's designed to come out at 4% with 1kg sugar (which is a guess,) that'll leave you with about 5.6% and a good balance on body and flavour.

Another choice, just add an additional 0.5kg of Light DME along with the requested 1kg sugar to get it to 4.7%

And last, use a total of 1.3kg of sugar (if you want the cheap route) and brew it up to 21 litres instead of 23 litres. That'll hit about 4.9% with no real impact on the body.

thanks for the advice, would you know what it would come out with 1kg of beer enhancer.

About the same as 1kg sugar would, just very slightly less. I dunno what the kit is brewed to via instructions, but i'm assuming around 4%-4.2%

 thanks once again might just do it with that i also have a little brewing sugar left over about 5oz so if i had that maybe that would bump it up a bit, dont really want it to be too strong this time ha ha :D andy.

Yeah its pretty wise to brew close to instructions, although I often brew kits short. With 30 pints of rocket fiel you'll get bored of drinking it, but with 40 pints of good beer, I know you're already planning your next kit ;)

it,s bubbling away right now, i done it with 1kg beer enhancer 5oz of brewing sugar, and i did 21 litres instead of 23, so hopefully it might have a little more body, and hopefully an abv of about 4.6 or there abouts, hopefully ha ha

Hiya, how did it go?
my first 'normal' coopers was tasty, but i feel a demand for some giggle juice, so I've been looking into turbo-charging a lager aswell.

so, some questions:
How short is it possible to go with the water? will the yeast handle the higher alcohol.
should i add malt to add body to compensate for the increased Malt extract.
