hello, i purchased a coopers irish stout the instructions recommend 500g spray malt and 200g brewing sugar. Would it still work with just brewing sugar? iv'e not got any spray malt and wanted to do it tonight.

thanks derek

Would it work? well yes it will probably ferment ok - Will it be just as good? NO - the other ingredients are recommended for good reason.
For the sake of a day or two just wait and get the right gear. You'll thank me when you're enjoying your brew in a few weeks time....

thanks for the reply, your right i will get the gear and brew as per instructions and have another pint of wherry instead

good man yourself - when you look at how long it takes to brew and condition a good beer it's silly to rush something by a day.

I'm curious about that stout, thinking of trying it myself....

i have made the coopers irish stout with beer enhancer, it produced an amazing pint which my retired neighbours raved about, well worth the wait to get it right, i have also done stout kits just with brewing sugar, it produces a good pint but not in the league of it being brewed with beer enhancer(spray malt, glucose)

Apparently a good recipe is Coopers Stout (not the irish) ,1 kilo of spray malt of your choice ,1 mug of brown sugar ( again optional, type optional) ,give it a REALLY good thrashing to aerate it .
This is supposed to froth over everywhere if fermented to warm.

Cheers,Spud.

just an update on this stout thanks to advice given i am now drinking this stout and it's wondefull thanks all :thumb:

Excellent I've bought one of these myself and will be brewing it soon.

Did you use the recommended 500g spray malt and 200g brewing sugar?

Hi,

Done the coopers Irish stout with 1kg dark spray malt

what ABV did you get ? does it compare at all to any commercial brews?

It's about 5 percent ABV. Made it to 20 ltr's OG 52
Then when froth died down added another 3ltr. Ended at
SG of 14 but can't calculate ABV accurately cuz of adding
the extra 3 ltr. It came out a bit like a Nog / Guinness
cross, but tastes brill anyway. :drink:
