I was moaning about it being -1.5c outside this morning imagine -14.4C I think i would have gone straight back to bed.

The lowest temperature in the UK for seven years was recorded on Thursday as snowy and icy weather continued to hit Britain.

Residents of Braemar in north-east Scotland were shivering in a temperature of -14.4C (6.1F), the Met Office said – the lowest temperature in the UK since 2012 when it reached -15.6C (3.9F) at Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

We were getting some dangerously cold weather here in Detroit. I think it was -30F at times factoring in the wind chill. I don't know if it set any records.
I even wore gloves the past few days which I usually avoid unless I'm shoveling snow.

They were talking to one lady over there on the radio here and she said it is so cold it hurts to breath and they are advising you only go out if it's absolutely necessary and limit the time you are out.

On a serious note the emergency services need to make people more aware that abandoning their vehicles unless advised to do so causes them a massive headache as the road becomes a slalom course and the snowplows cannot get through.

It'll cause the owners an even bigger headache when they come to retrieve them only to find that the cars have been liberated of everything that can be sold at Cash Converters. Well that's how it'd be round here but we've only had a dusting. Jolly cold tho' ... I've taken advantage of the conditions and switched off and left the door open of the fridge in the garage where an FV of stout is cold-crashing. 1.1°C upon checking half an hour ago and I ain't using any leccy!

Same here: don't have a brew fridge, so hefted a DJ full of dryhopped beer outdoors for a few hours at -2C or so before bottling

Yeah, that's pretty much how it is in this kind of weather. You do get a nice shock to the lungs if you breath in through the mouth--basically sends you into a coughing fit. You learn pretty early on in life not to do that, so you breath slowly through you nose (jogging is bad) plus keep you head down and your face covered as much as possible.
The real trick and it's basically common sense is to dress appropriately for those short trips from point A to point B. If you do that, you hardly notice how cold it is. And, realistically, in my area, the longest one is outside is the walk between car and any building which wouldn't be more than a minute.
We've got a heat wave moving in tomorrow, should be above freezing for part of the day and then a real scorcher for the game on Sunday--50F or something like that. Glad because I'll be cooking fish in chips for 20 people outside on the patio.

This morning on BBC news they showed someone throwing boiling water in the air and it turning into ice instantly i cannot find it but this guy does a better job.

What I dont get are inuit/eskimos. Surely noone enjoys being really, really cold (ok maybe Gunge does). Millennia ago when their ancestors discovered it wasnt going to get any warmer the further north they went, wouldnt they have started heading south again (I bleedin would have)?

Up here we reccon we are developing a lower body mass, hirsute and big claw toes to hang on. Feks holding a pint glass though,,,
