Iv done a couple of these and 1 i binned (orange) it looked as if something was growning at the top of the brew so tipped down the sink. The other 1 was the summer fruits and that took just over a week too ferment out 0.094. So primed and bottled, left for a week before trying and must admit was nice just abit too much sedament. But left a few bottles in the fridge for another week and all the sediment settled to the bottom of the bottles and was alot better. made mine strong too mix with lemonade and was impressed so much so that im doing another couple of dj's another summer fruits and apple & blackcurrant again to mix with lemonade..

OH and another note our morrisons are selling the robbinsons at 88p  so will get a couple more at weekend

I have done orange and mango BUT NOT THE FRUIT & BARLEY and nearly binned it coz of the weird stuff floating round in it that seem to come out of nowhere
and thought this was my first infected brew...
I thought arr well its in there I will see how it turned out,
and after the sniff test and a dubious taste I deemed it saveable
and once racked off it was fine, to be honest the orange wasnt the best brew but it did have something about it that made me wanna do it again but with a few tweaks.

We might not be talking about the same thing but mine were a little whiter what the brew clumps that almost formed string like blobs

I drank it and didnt die and tasted ok maybe this is just something that happens with the orange

FINALLY managed to get space and time to put one of these on last night. I did the summer fruits version, but for a DJ i boiled about a bottle and a third from what people were saying about some being watery, and also because i wanted to add more sugar for a stronger brew.

Added 603g of sugar plus the couple of spoon fulls in the yeast starter and the OG was 1046.

18 hours later and i wouldn't say it's gone off like a rocket, but there's definite activity

quick question - what is the expected FG?

I've no idea about the FG but I think it's deceptively strong and will need to label it with instructions to keep it away from the kids.

But roll on tomorrow afternoon! :D

Yes mine was a white blobby thing, that if i shuck up the dj the stuff did sink to the bottom but more would grow in a day or so.. so thought to be safe and binned it.

Tried this with the strawberry & kiwi & the peach squashes. Verdict ? Not unpleasant, does actually improve after 2 weeks in bottle, but its got to be chilled to get over the saccharine, just ice isn't enough. I can see the appeal as a light refreshing drink when its hot but TBH I'm sticking to the ale.

I started a dj of summer fruits about nearly 2 days ago but it still hasnt started bubbing...used 650g sugar. also used desert wine yeast as it was all i had... any ideas whats slowing any signs of fermentation??

Ok, after three weeks the fizz is there!

I have to say it is too sweet for me. My idea of a BBQ thirst quencher is a hoppy IPA.

But, The good lady loves it and presented me with another two bottles of Robinsons last night.

Added the extra boiled cordial (about a third of a bottle) and it has sweetened it up nicely. Primed and bottled on Friday but trying to leave it alone for a few weeks (though daughter took 2 bottles of it 'flat' to a party and quaffed both without complaint).

I also had that 'stringy blob' stuff floating on the juice when I boiled and simmered but I just sterilised a sieve and collected it off the top - daughter has drank it with no ill effects so am not too worried.

My pink grapefruit version is still fermenting but I think that's cos the house is a bit warm today (for a change). Looking forward to getting it bottled - it is delish :D

Thanks again SecondToNone for the recipe.

took the bucket which was on my heating pad off and stuck the demijohn on this morning... bubbling away now :) it had the yeast nutrient in it too but it had been sitting about for ages in the cupboard and had went solid but broke apart easily with a spoon so maybe that slowed things down as well a lack of heat..

bubbling now tho so happy days!

Well mines turned out very well!

And after letting the missus and a 'few' of her friends have a go I now apparently have to do it on a much much larger scale.

Ok, so I bottled mine today.
I had a sample before bottling, and as I expected, the additional sugar resulted in lack of taste, so I boiled up another 2/3 of a bottle for 10 mins, added 60g of sugar and dissolved it and used this as my priming solution.

I have a question regarding my gravity readings though... i just cant believe that their right. I checked and checked and checked on both OG and FG.

I added 603g of sugar plus 2 spoonfulls to the primer. The OG was 1.046.
When i came to bottling today, the SG read 0.940.
The ABV calculator on this site reckons that's a whopping 14% ABV. Surely not? I was only aiming for about 7%!

Either way, after adding my priming/flavouring solution i siphoned into the bottling bucket, then took another gravity reading which read 1.000 flat.

It tastes lovely flat, I have to say, But can someone set me straight - I havent really ended up with 14% have i?

Any reading that comes out much lower than about .990 should be suspect, and .940 is quite a bit lower than that. Perhaps you misread and it's .994? That gives an SG of 6.9, almost exactly what you were aiming for.

Ah. now that I think about it, you are right, I think I've just been an idiot and misread it. It was 0.994.
Well. Thank God for that. I wanted to make it slightly stronger but drinkable, not power my car with it.
Cheers mate.

Again, just to reiterate - it tastes lovely. The missus is certainly a fan. Cheers SecondToNone.

got one on the go today doing a 15 litre batch used apple and pear juice i also added a kilo of fresh mixed berries boiled up for 20 mins and 2.5 kilo of mixed sugars aiming to hit around sg1070 i hit 1068 so pretty happy wanted to make it about 9%. my plan is to clear it up and bottle it flat and use lemonade to serve it bringing the % down to drinkable level will let you know what its like when ready

Hi guys, I know it's probably a bit like how longs a piece of strong...but how long should it be till you see some action. And should there be the yeasty stuff loitering at the top?

I've got a picture but will have to wait before the site allows me to post a url

Mine have produced a small amount of bubbles/foam within 24 hours. It's certainly not ferocious like a TC or WOW in my experience but you should see some activity quite soon I think.

I put a Strawberry and Kiwi on at the weekend and it's going strong now and have a pink grapefruit to start when the mood takes me. I took the last lot (a tropical) camping with me and it went down a storm.

Thanks to the reply b2b - having done some research i think i made 2 fundemental errors.

At step one i used water which was more than luke warm and i understand this could have killed the yeast

When boiling the robinsons although i don't think i let it cool enough although i did add cool water prior to putting into the demijohn.

Ultimately i think i probably failed at this stage lol. Still will leave it a few days and check tonight to see what she is saying.

Can i add more yeast at a later stage or is it best to drain, clean everything and start again?

(Only my second brew, first one was a Wilko jobbie which turnt out really well although i did forget about it for a few days after putting it in the demijohn so maybe i am being impatient still :hmm: )

Made this last sunday. Did a mixed fruits version with slightly more sugar ( the wife wanted it stronger as in all likly hood she would be the one drinking it!!).

Have to say it went of like a rockect after a day and is still frothing like mad. The pink foam is slightly disconcerting but am crossing my fingers :thumb:
