Well I did a batch of this using

900g of sugar and
2x tropical

And another with
900g of sugar and
2 x peach

As I was cooking it I noticed it stayed a lot hotter than normal
And added cold water like normal but the extra sugar retains heat
(Specific heat capacity for us geeks)
(Why mc Donald's apple pie is hotter than the suns core to the rest of us)

I ran cold water over the demijohn for a few mins but still pitched the yeast too early just being lazy and not waiting till it was luke warm
And because of that it had set me back 3-4 days as I had to add more yeast and start from the beginning!

But made me think that even us seasoned brewers get too excited about starting our brews
It's of the upmost importance that you let the brew cool down to below 20c before u add your yeast otherwise it is killed outright!

What I normal go off is 21c is room temp so if the Demi John is cooler or cold to the touch u are safe to pitch the yeast, just a tip coz people are always wanting to speed there ferment times up... Doing it right is gaurenteed to help your yeast perform their best!

Well I created a pdf of the original recipe so swmbo can have a go at making one, nicely laid out and printed a few copies off, the recipe is spreading :D

Got 4 bottles and 2 spare 'jerry cans' to fill tonight, will go with 500g sugar just as, well there's a kilo in a bag and 2 vessels, and got enough in a half bag to prime.

Couldnt find Lemon Barley in my nearest Sainsbury's or Tesco, all the other Barleys but that (Only what Robinsons are famous for in my eyes) so will try some Lemon squash with a dash of glycerine

Also a jpg version, did edit text a little to look like guidelines, and a quick spell check, that decided on the american version of Aging!!

I've got a tropical and a strawberry & kiwi to get going shortly, never seen the strawberry & cream, sounds interesting!

I like printing recipes out so I can put them into my recipe book along with batch sheets of wines.. Good job :thumb:

Any chance of posting a link to the actual PDF
What did you use to make this PDF? I'm limited to an ipad so I use pages for mine.

I knocked it up in Quark and Photoshop (I use them for a 'living') but not on latest Quark at work!!
Will put the pdf on a file hosting site later (Work internet not too good)

I also have a load of recipes as I googled them, printed them as notepad files, to keep/write notes on.

As this was so simple and bound to appeal to some friends, I did a little extra to it

How many bottles of juice did you use? I thought I mentioned but I made up a 23L batch of the tropical drink a while ago using 5L of juice when it was on offer and it's fantastic! :thumb: Amazing especially when it cost under £7 including the sugar!

used 4 bottles to make up 20 L I think...will have to check my notes...

Shall finally be making some of this tomorrow, 4 bottles in Sainsburys, £4

Although the local Co-Op has a similar deal on, ermmm 4 bottles would be £5!!

Hi i put 1 of these on on thursday (the summer fruits).. At the moment everything is looking good, the air lock is bubbling away at a few bubbles a second, temp is between 20c to 22c.
I did how ever up the sugar as i thought i could use fizzy lemonade as a mixer or just have it with ice, (just depends what it tastes like, some have said it can taste a little watery). The og was 1.052 so around the 8%abv depending what the fg comes out..

I am thinking of doing the rasberryaide as well but on that recipe it states RACK and BOTTLE..

So will i need too rack this summer fruits or will i just be ok too bottle and carb, and wait till it as carbonated before we can drink it.

If i have too rack how exactly do i do that  still alot too learn. I know it gets transfered too another dj but for how long?? and do i have to add other things ect ect

P.s cant wait too try this it smelt great while simmering in the pan :D

Depending on the brew I normally rack, then either batch prime or bottle prime and bottle at that same stage.

If there's a lot of sediment and its still not really clear (this brew won't clear so not to much to worry about :thumb: ) then I'd rack and add finnings. Regarding that though if there's only a little bit of sediment thn I'd add the finnings to Demi then and just rack once cleared.

Now if any of that made sense, I hope it helped lol

Have saved this an will attempt tomoz when I have time to sterilise all this new stuff I bought

Finally got 2 lots on the go, lthough been a few hours, no life yet, but will put it down to my plastic Jerry can things :D

My tropical and strawberry and kiwi both went down really well with my friends, everyone was impressed and are waiting for me to do some more. I put a apple and pear and a peach one on afew days ago. The apple and pear isn't really doing much compared to the peach. Need to go buy some airlocks for my other djs when I've got some money and will put 6 of them on, gona need to stock up :D

just tried my first batch i was not sure if i like it . might try a lemon one next

Hi guys. I want to try this as my first brew. Ive just got a demijohn and its only a 4.5L one. Will the quantities stated her be ok or do they need reducing?
Many thanks, Rob

A glass Demi is 4.5L at the shoulder (well roughly, I have mines marked with litre steps and 4.5L at the top, all written on masking tape, really helpful at times!) so no need to alter anything IMO

Just remember to leave space in it in case it foams up and then top it up once it's plodding on doing its thing. :thumb:

Thanks for that. Im going to give it a go this evening. Hopefully all goes well.

Thanks, Rob

I gave strawberry and kiwi a try and its bubbling away nicely. I only used wine yeast from wilkinsons with the nutrient so hope eveything goes ok.
