This is much cheaper though and specifically made for ale - http://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk/lig ... -1656.html

Although I have used the H&B one in the past succesfully with kits, even as a test, made a 10 litre extract brew with the H&B malt only + hops of course and and it came out fine. So use it if you have a H&B handy... Sometimes they have 2 for 1 offers or second item for 1p etc ... makes it worth stocking a few !

The trouble with non-brewing extract could be:

1) Brewing extracts are made from brewing quality grain
2) Brewing extracts are made in a way such as to ensure that undesirable stuff (e.g. tannins etc) don't make it into the extract
3) Brewing extracts are carefully colour controlled
4) Brewing extracts seem to have been through hot and cold breaks (because I've used them "raw" in kits without any chill haze...)
5) There is a risk that "culinary" extracts have seen a bit of caramelisation during the condensation process

However, there is no reason why you *couldn't* use it in an extract brew which is going to be boiled and cooled thus breaking out any remaining proteins, you just won't have a lot of control over the malt element of the brew...

Right, just wondered because we have a H&B near us and was thinking of using it for some 1 can kits instead of sugar or brew enhancer 50/50 mix's.

Oh well back to the drawing board.

I have used it in some 1 can kits before and it's been fine. Probably only good for the darker kits though, as it is on the dark side - probably akin to Amber LME.

3 jars = Approx 1.3kg - which is about right as a substitute for Sugar / BKE

Ahh, so about £7.50 then.
Just thought it would give more body than a sugar DME 50/50 mix thats all.
