Carbonating beer using bike co2 pump

Hey up,

I'm getting fed up of using priming sugar to make my beer fizzy, hate all the dead yeast the bottom of the bottles.

so i had an idea.

I put my beer in 2l plastic bottles, so if i put a tyre valve in the cap and got a cycling co2 pump then i could charge the bottles that way and avoid using priming sugar

Has anybody else done this? do we think it would work?

It's basically a co2 cylinder with a valve on the top

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, but the bottles would have to be very cold and you'd have to be very careful not to over pressurise. You'll probably still get a little bit of something settling out though, unless you start filtering your beer.

if the inflator has a reliable gauge it should work a treat, PET bottles are easy to evacuate all air out of by squeezing and a SS tyre valve from ebay will fit in a 10mm hole in a pet cap easily too, the danger is in the ease of over conditioning. hitting a target condition with a gauged device should be do-able, just consult a kegging pressure chart for the target condition and the optimum temp and pressure to set the bottles at,

I'm sure it would work, what you're basically talking about is achievable with bought equipment, if you had one of these with a corny disconnect and a carbonator cap.
Your way will of course be a lot cheaper:

It works fine I've done it although I prefer to use a mini keg.

You will need to have the beer cold and you will probably have to do it bit by bit. Inject some Co2 leave it to stand over night then add more until its fully carbonated.

The problem is that doing it this way is not very controllable and unless your very very careful your looking at a LOT of froth.

Plenty about is on US sites.

Thanks, i'm not a fan of massively fizz beer, i just want to give it a little bit of life, no too keen on the flat stuff
