Hello,

I was brewing the other night and my boiler stopped working 7 minutes before the end of a 90 minute boil. Very annoying.

Does anyone know if this will have any adverse effects on the finished beer? I'm thinking maybe the flavour hops would not have been able to do their job having only boiled for around 8 minutes?

Peter

When was your last hop addition? The only problem I see is that many people have additions at 5 minutes and you'd have obviously missed that one if that's the case.

If not, then I'm sure it will be fine even if it isn't the ideal situation :thumb:

The recipe called for hops at the start of the boil and then flavour hops 15 minutes before the end. That's it. So I didn't miss any actual hop additions. I think it will still be OK. I'm making the beer for my wedding and I can't really imagine any of my guests saying "Hmmm, this beer tastes like the flavour hops were only boiled for 8 minutes" :D

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I'm fairly sure the hot break was ok - the wort was clear and there were very large clumps of trub. I assume that's what it should look like? :)

If anyone does, you should make sure they sign up for a beer judging exam IMMEDIATELY as their palette is god-like :D

Did you figure out what was wrong with the boiler?

You're totally fine mate, but there's an easy solution if you want to compensate - just boil your quantity of flavour hops in a few litres of water for the same amount of time. At 8 minutes they're likely to add little but aroma - my aroma hops go in at 10 minutes and then in small amounts until the end. Give it a taste though, you can even use this technique after fermentation, providing you can stir without it screwing up your brew.

I haven't figured out what's wrong with it but I suspect the element has gone. It's one of the cheapy Ritchies boilers and I've had to replace the element before. Might be a good excuse to throw some money at a new boiler!

Any recommendations?

Yea, build one from the 50 or 70L stainless pots from ebay france :-P There's a load of threads about them.
