Just read an interesting article on boil time.
As a novice I’ve always boiled for 60, but the article points out that if your first hop addition is at 30 then boil for 30 !

Interesting. Do people follow this principle ?

Nope. My hoppy ales start with 15 minute hop additions but I still boil for an hour. Why? All my gravity and volume calculations are formulated for an hour's boil and I can't be bothered to work out what it would mean to boil for less. In any case I use the free time to set up my chiller, measure hops, clean up stuff from the mash and sterilise the fermenter and all its fittings.

I've done a few 30 minute boils for hopburst pale ales with all the additions in the last 15 minutes. Couldn't detect any off flavours. Thought about going for a 15 minute boil but completely illogically decided against it - it felt too risky, though there's no good reason why I thought that!

Like foxbat, my calculations are also based upon a 60-minute boil. I also get the impression that hop bitterness calculations are somehow off for shorter boil times. I brewed a Westmalle clone, but my calculations for hop bitterness also only started at about 30 minutes, because I bought some fresh hops in a (for me) larger quantity.
So I reasoned to used more hops for lesser time. I did this twice, and both beers could have used more bitterness.

Nope, but I adjust the boiling time as I use to "boil" at 90 degrees, sometime it's a bit longer to get the target gravity.
