Manchester.....scorchio !
Today sees the V1 brewery return to action. The brew is a variation of M Ollossons Flowers Original Bitter. It's a variation as I don't have any Target hops for bittering so it's styrian all the way.
This brew will also see a couple of brewery mods in action, namely a new vertical hop screen in the copper, a new sparge arm type device called Eskimo's widget , with new support, and the use of my new Totton GP20/12 pump.
I'll also be trying fly sparging using the sugar points system, which is like a baptism by fire  ...I'll need all the luck I can get! Will be using my immersion chiller today for a change, might even try whirlpooling...haven't decided yet :hmm:
Pics will follow as always

60ltr brew length, OG 1.044, IBU 30

The Mash (90mins)

8.85kg Maris Otter
954g Crystal 120L

The copper (90 mins)

225g Styrian Golding 3%AA first wort hopped
1.4kg Golden Syrup after 1 hour
Whirlfloc tab at 80mins
100g styrian Golding steeped at 80 deg c for aroma.

Mash on and hit target temp 1245
Presently 19.5 deg c in Manchester and drizzling every now and then

All doughed in ready for recirc start, pre heating heat exchanger to mash temp prior to recirc,
and Eskimo's widget in action, recirc started....will insert more pics as I go along :thumb:

That truly is a sexy brewery you have there V
I hope that the rest of the day goes according to plan :thumb:

What is that widget? Is that the return form the Herm's in the mash? Looks like it fans the wort out 360 degrees is that correct?
Anyways have a good day and a nice beer.

Sounds like you're having some good weather for once!

It reminds me of a review for a Manchester pub/restaurant I saw, "Sam's Chop House is much a part of the city as rain"

Were you tempted to substitute the syrup for grain?

Have a good one mate - looking forward to seeing how you get on with the sugar points :thumb:

That's the one MD, basically it's a ss one of these

No way  I really like the taste of the syrup in this recipe. It gives a depth and body to the mouthfeel which I've not tried to replace with grain yet...not sure I want too, as it's sooo scrummy :drink: A few commercial brewieries used to use invert sugar of one form or another, though not sure if they still do.

End of recirc...lovely runnings, end of fly sparging...very different colour above grain bed, copper awaiting runnings

The set up as running off, herms pump pumping runnings to copper, liquor pump pumping to tun, at equal rates. hard to see or describe really :D time for a beer :drink:

Dunno why I thought All Grain meant just that and breweries using copper sugars were just tight. But if it makes an improvement to the beer who am I to argue heh. I know my Dad would be pleased if I could make a faithful recreation, another one to add to the list.

Good point :D
All ended well, though I was 2 points under gravity, I think due to a school boy error
I changed the hopping schedule a little bit, as I forgot how much I don't like small amount of hops knocking around after a batch, so 300g went into the boiler as fwh :D
Didn't try whirlpooling as the IC would pretty much have ruined that idea, and there were too many wasps about to consider removing the IC and then whirlpooling
No signs of bubbles yet but the temps rising so the yeasties are at work

Just looked up M.O.'s original recipe. As you probably know I've done a few of his too.
A defo on the must do list ;)

By the way got to agree with you too,re the use of syrup,a great asset to your brew. :thumb:

This beer is now 12 days old and it's been in the fv at 5 deg c for the last 5 days. I meant to rack it yesterday but didn't have time, same today.
Unfortunately homebrew stocks are non existant, and I'm fed up with paying for beer....so that can mean only one thing :P

Drew of half a demi for quaffing tonight, it's tasting mighty fine if not a bit cold
Not a new record for drinking a beer but not far off, 7 day wit being the quickest.

Better get another brew on soon as this one wont last very long
I need 2 fv's
