I'm sure this will get quite heated but.....
I'd go for a ps3 it's a good gaming machine (not as good as xbox) But it supports alot more interactivity with multimedia.
I have it linked to the Pc so with a media server you can access folders on your computer from the pS3 (photos music Dvd's) It's got BBCi player on it. It's doing everything I want out of it and more.

I second the PS3! everything MD said plus:

Plays Blue Rays
Plays DVD's
Free Internet Gaming
I-Player
Wireless internet included
Works with pc!
Bluetooth
Large Hard Drive
US military use them as a super computer
They run on linux
you can do a Third-party OS install (not on slim version)
reliabile (unlike xbox who have had Microsoft has admitted it's having problem with the consoles)

Have both a PS3 and Xbox360 in this house I personally prefer the PS3 its much easier to set up for streaming movies from than the 360 their is more functionality on the PS3, Both the PS3 and 360 look great when playing games their are slight diffrences to how the games look as in on one machine it looks better than the other but TBH you have to be looking real hard to notice anyway.
PS3 has a built in web browser the 360 does not.

You can easily buy a humongus hard drive and fit it for the PS3 where the 360 the hadrdrive comes in a plastic enclosure so your limmited to the size you can buy.

PS3 runs linux as another OS if you really want.

Xbox360 you can change the xmb interface but you need to chip it with the possability of M$ stopping online play as its been chiped ( their are workarounds but you can kill the machine if your not very carefull )

All in all they both do the same thing but PS3 personally wins hands down for ease of setup , looking better next to the DVD player ( its black and shiney ) more reliable ( they do break though ) have a built in blueray player ( 360 you need to buy one )

Bad points the PS3 costs more where as you can get a 360 with 2 controllers for £140 at the moment
Go to a shop and have a try on both if you can make your own mind up is really the best as I know that their are 360 fan boys and PS3 fan boys who say which is best and wont be budged im just speaking from experiance of having the 2 types of consoles in the house and have personally found the PS3 much easier for setup for streaming. The 360 was a pain as you have to get a code from it and plug that into mediacentre for it to be streamed to the PS3 just sees the folder when given permissions and streams happily.

Oh use a 1gig network if your streaming as a 100 meg one has a habbit of stuttering especially with hidef files.

Thanks' lads, especially damfoose for the detailed information about both. :thumb:

xbox 360 for me, main reason is xbox live. I have a few friends who have both ps3 and xbox and they all say that ps3 online is rubbish compared to xbox live. I know you have to pay for xbox live but it is only £25 a year

i had a PS one and two - have an x-box know - for pure gaming (especially online) it HAS to be the x-box , i want my games console to play games !!! OK microsoft`s plan for world domination is a bit annoying but you can get x-box live for around 28quid of ebay - and its well worth it! Plus x-box games can be a little cheaper than ps3 games.

sorry PS3 fans :( but as a x-box convert

Another Xbox 360 user here. It's not all as doom and gloom as some people would have you believe with their reliability; I've had mine from a couple of weeks after they launched, with no trouble. (Yeah I know... famous last words... :P ).

I'll no doubt end up getting a PS3 as well eventually, but there's not been anything for it yet that has made me want to get one.

I know it's a bit up to the individual, but I much prefer the feel of the Xbox controller over the PS.

I've played on both and have got to say ps3 or me. Its a software upgradable blu-ray player (for example when 3d blu-ray comes out, it will be a firmware upgrade and thats it!) and console in 1! Both have good games, but the blu-ray aspect swings it for me. Imagine the 'stack' if you need your blu-ray player, console, satellite, and amp (maybe vcr), always best to have 1 less item!

MOST games come out for PS3 and 360, so best off going for the more powerful option, if you have the pennies. :thumb:

PS3 for me, very very versatile machine with blu ray, and linux on it turns it into a front room PC of sorts!

just got a wii for my lad for chrimbo, one thing I will say for the wii is the homebrew aspect of it is great, (very easy to play backup games of a usb2 harddrive therefore no need to go out and buy all the latest titles)
