beer sugar level

Hello there,

Im new to home brewing and was after a bit of help. I have a sugar per litre measuring device. when I started the brew it said 160 gr per litre and now it is 75 gr per litre. 160gr seemed a little high to start, Is this normal? with a decrese of 85gr per litre, what sort of alcohol percent will it be? what level will it be at the end of fermentation?

DISCLAIMER: This may all be codswallop.

Never come across readings like that, but a little google fu tells me that 160g/l is about a starting gravity of 1080. That's quite high.

75g/l is a present gravity of about 1037, giving an alcohol content of 5.7%. This is only 46% attenation which sounds low. However, the alcohol could be messing up the reading.

What on earth are you brewing, and how did you do it?

And what is this sugar measuring device? We generally use hydrometers calibrated in specific gravity (or Brix/Plato for some of them).

You best bet is to go out and get yourself a Hydrometer.

Im living in Sweden at the moment for work and they only seem to make metric things here.

Im actually making a home brew kit and have been following the instructions faily accurately. Whatever it ends up like,Im sure it will taste better than swedish beet and also not cost six pound a pint.

 

To my way of thinking (and I am certainly not going to argue with JB) 1 Kg of sugar per litre will give 360 degs IE an SG of 1.360.
Following that 1g per litre will give 0.36 degs IE an SG of 1.0036.
I rekon that 160 g/l = SG 1.058 and 75 g/l = SG 1.027.
This is not cast in stone!

Actually, you're probably right ericstd. I didn't even think about trying to calculate it like that and went straight to Google.

Sorry James, I'm going with ericstd's answer.
160g/litre is about 1.059, which is a good Original Gravity for a strong ale
75g/litre is about 1.027
32 point drop = 4.3% alcohol at the moment.
It should fall to around 30-35g/litre giving around 6.5% alcohol :

Six quid a pint?!
I suppose Sweden's cheaper than Iceland.
