I've been using it and think it's really good. My problem has been finding a program that will turn it into a decent label. So far I have downloaded Avery's free designer but they don't have a specific template for beer labels. Has anyone got something better to use with beer labeliser?

High there Steve

Don't be sorry for posting the link, there will be many other brewers on the site that haven't seen it already.

Apart from the link you posted, there are quite a few out there to use but have limited usage. Here are a few to have a play with. When I remember the others I will add them to the post.

Thanks for the info Neil ill have a play around with these today

I had a problem finding software to print out decent labels as well. My final solution was to have one of my buddies who is a tattoo artist draw the label I wanted, and used my scanner to save it as a .jpg. From there I'd just use the full 8x11 Avery paper and print out the labels. That way I didn't have to worry about printing to the rectangle labels and choose the shape of the label. It works great for printing labels for caps as well.

What is the code fro the 8x11 Avery paper? Do you buy the labels with adhesive already on and how much of a PITA is it to get them off afterwards if you do?

How do you print on caps???

Cheers

I'm not sure what you mean by code for the paper. This is paper made by Avery that is adhesive, but rather than being in the pre-cut rectangle labels, it is one whole sheet. It is the size of normal printer paper. I get it at just about any office supply store or scrapbooking shop. To print on the cap is very easy with this paper; because it's one sheet, you just make your design to fit the cap. Then you cut out the design and slap it on the cap.

To remove the labels isn't hard at all. I don't bottle much because it's time consuming, and I'm bottling off a corny keg, so I need to clean and sanitize the beer gun to fill a few bottles. If I have friends who want a few bottles I will bottle a six pack or so. Other than that I bottle three beers of each batch for competition. Prior to filling a bottle, the bottles I'm going to use get soaked in PBW over night to get rid of any funkiness that may be inside, and the labels, both commercial and homemade just slip right off. For competitions bottles must be plain brown glass with no markings, so I wouldn't fuss with this if it was too difficult to get the labels off.

I have some fellow brewers who take another approach which is a tad cheaper. They use standard printer paper, and print out the label they want. From there they use a glue stick to get the label on the bottle. That is super easy to get off as the glue is water soluble. I've heard the labels sometimes slip off due to condensation in the fridge though.

I think it was on here that I got the tip to use hairspray to fix the colour on the paper and milk to stick them on, it really does work and doesn't smell.

Milk is a really good adhesive and means you can use normal paper. I use a laser printer and that doesn't run if it gets wet. I usually get 4 labels to a sheet. Not tried it on the caps, but I'm sure it would work.

I use Avery J8166 copies from Ebay...I know they're the square ones but I prefer to just make my own design on Publisher. Much quicker to stick on than messing with milk or PVA.

They were a pain to remove but then I discovered that if I fill the bottle with hot water from the tap and leave it for 20 secs so the glass gets hot they peel straight off.

Sorry - quick sideline question for arty here.
So you are bottling beer straight from the corny that is already carbonated?
Does it not foam up too much? Does it hold the carbonation over time?
This is something I'd considered doing just take are beers to friends as gifts but worried they'd go flat quickly.

Hi P,
do a search on beer gun or counterflow bottle filler. ;)
As for labels, I am pleased with, being a linux fan, glabel, you stay in control of what you are doing, layout, jegs, print size, etc. ;)

Puravida I'll start a new thread in the equipment section of the forum that goes into this as to not get this thread off topic.
