When batch spargeing do you dough back in when the second sparge water goes in?
Also how long would you leave the second lot of sparge water in for?

Sorry for the silly questions

I batch sparge at the moment and find it easier and more relaxed.
My method taken from the instructions issued with a ESB kit purchased from The Homebrew Centre ( sponsors ) on my first AG brew.
23 litre brew.

Mash all grains at 67C for 1 hour in 14.5 litres of water. Top up after 1 hour with 6 litres of water at 80C. Stir and mix well, leave to settle for 15 mins.
Drain and recirculate a few litres until runnings are clear.
Drain this first batch to your boiler or a bucket.
Add the second batch of water to your grains 13 litres at 80C. Mix well and again let it settle for 15 mins. Drain and recirculate until runnings are clear again. Then drain this second batch to your boiler or bucket.

Mix the whole lot together in your boiler and boil, adding your hops when appropriate.

Its worked out ok for me Andy.

Hi PiddleDribble - do you know what kind of efficiency you are getting with this method?

Great, thanks piddle.

Wasn't sure how long to leave it for the second sparge and as i said wether to re mix.

1, So for mine then i'll add the first lot of liquer to the mash tun and dough in and leave to mash for an hour

2, then run off to the FV and then add the remainder of the liquer to the mashtun and mix then leave for another 15 mins.

3, Whilst thats mashing i can pour the first lot of wort into the boiler and start to bring it upto the boil.

4, Then run the second lot of wort into the FV after 15mins and pour that into the boiler to give me my final pre boil volume!

Hope this sound correct?

I'm still a batch sparger.. never yet seen the need to try fly sparge although I have enough bits and pieces around to do it.. maybe I am just lazy..

I dough in with the required amount of water ( lets say 23 litres as that's about normal for my 10 gallon set up )
Leave this for 90 mins at mash temp
Top up the tun with c.20 litres of water heated to around 85C - stir well and leave for 15 mins
recirculate around 6 litres and then this will drain the tun collecting around 33 litres
Top up the tun again with 30 litres, stir well again and leave for 15 mins
recirculate around 6 litres again and drain - should collect the amount put in for the 2nd sparge ( ie 30 litres )

I get 84% efficiency using this method in my set up :thumb:

yes sounds right Andy. Dont forget to stir well after 60 mins leave for 15 then drain. add next lot stir well leave 15 mins and drain.
I dont start my boil till its all together in boiler as I like to take a gravity reading of the whole brew and can adjust it if necessary.
Can even mash another little lot off, if the last wort tastes sweet ( or take a gravity reading of that as well )

My efficiency according to BrewMate ( which I'm not certain is very accurate ) shows 83%. Certainly helping me to hit my targets of volume and gravity.

just a note here ( i batch sparge too ) the amount of water required for 1st batch depends on how much grain but also on style of brew . When i brew a weizen i have 3.1 water to grain and i often have 5kg of grain so i will mash with 15 liters of water . the less water you mash with the closer the particals are to each other which means there will be a greater efficiency and so the opposite for more water means less efficiency as particals are further away from each other and convert less etc . now i think a lot of beers want around 2.5 to 1 .
The grain will absorb around 1l per kg so for me i would only get around 10l on first runnings
Then when you do next set of water for mash , you want it at mash out temp (76c) and leave for around 15/20 mins then drain, repeat a third time if needed. Also when stirring mash avoid over splashing as this could hinder lagers and such light brews

Thanks i didn't know that!
Im going on brew engine tonight to work out my volumes for my brew.

Ingredients:
Grains:
M Otter 5000g
Crystal 0.200g

Hops:
Cacade 0.100g
0.050g @ 60mins
0.025g @ 15mins
0.025g @ 0mins
60min boil

IBU, SG, volumes (etc) to be worked out tonight on beer engine.

Hopefully this seems ok and it won't be too bitter but will be quite heady.
If anyone can see a problem with what im doing please feel free to put me right as im kinda doing this on a wing and a prayer.

Andy
