Anything wrong with putting a lid & airlock on primary fv?

I don't think you can brew in a completely sealed container as the pressure would get too high. In practice, the lids on the fermenting buckets aren't fully sealed so the CO2 should get out somewhere.

Glad I found this thread. Am I right in thinking that some of you use a fully sealed bucket for primary fermentation? I have a 5 gallon bucket with a lid but NO AIRLOCK. I plan on fermenting in that for a week, then switching to a secondary fermenter, that does have an airlock, for a few weeks.

Bit nervous now about airborne nasties because I got curious after a day or so and peeked into the bucket...

The odd peek will be fine, if you want to put an airlock in the bucket lid, just use one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-spare-air ... 19c801d0e5

with an airlock of course!

I use 5 gallon fv's with a 4" lid and an airlock and bung, youngs ubrew ones from Wilko, although they seem to have started selling their own OEM ones I think.

I've always done it like this, but on the odd occasion I need to use a bucket, I have lids with the grommets in.

each to their own tho.

Well, I'm wondering if I need the airlock in the primary at all since I'm transferring to secondary anyway. The secondary I bought has an airlock and is described as ideal for a secondary ferment. But now I'm wondering if I can't just use that one for primary.

King Keg Top Tap with 8grm Pin Valve Cap

The barrel has a capacity of 5.6 gallons, giving a good head space for the production of CO2 during secondary fermentation. The barrel has a wide 4" neck allowing for easy cleaning and filling. Twin drop handles for safe and easy handling. Safety neck with interrupted thread and a strengthened base. The barrel is made of prime grade material, which is abrasion resistant. We supply this barrel with a combined injection and pressure valve cap. Pin valve is suited for use with 8g gas bulbs and bulb holder

you should always have some kind of air release. yeast dont like pressure buildup

Is there any way to tell if CO2 isn't escaping? Would the lid fully pop off if enough pressure built up?

I'm pretty sure my pressure is getting out somehow but just worried that if it isn't it may be interfering with the fermentaion process.

If you air lock isn't bubbling then its escaping somewhere. everything is fine
