Not a massive gamer anymore, as I have had other things keeping me busy for the past few years, but I just bought myself a Sega megadrive so I can see this changing some time soon!

I was wondering if anyone here has ever used the flash carts you can buy, specifically the everdrive ? I was thinking of getting one for the megadrive and for an n64, but they are a little pricey! And I'm trying to work out what the difference between the 1st gen and later models are, so I can work out which to buy.

Looking forward to playing things like streets of rage, which I have not done for many many years.... ahhh the memories of evenings at my friends house after primary school are flooding back! Fast forward to the late 90s and 2000 and there's me sat in front of the n64 playing things like lylat wars.

I can see my new house being an arcade/brewery :)

I still play my megadrive sometimes I like shinobi and James pond they two are probably my fav, I've got an Xbox to but I'm not a gamer or anything I just enjoy the odd shot, can't beat a bit of FIFA

Im going to be hooking it up soon and giving it a go, just going to see if I can find the old n64 and get that working  :thumb:

My pal had an n64 but I never liked it much, goldeneye was ok though, my other friends had master systems but I always swore by the megadrive, I had a few beers and a good shot at super hang on last week lol

I've found plenty of N64 and MegaDrive/MasterDrive games available through PS3, so have put my MegaDrive and PS1 in the loft.

Currently reliving the fun of ToeJam and Earl! :D

Good times!! I will be looking out for a flash cart for each system , should be good getting them up and running again and working through the games . Didn't get to test the n64 today as I had sold the expansion pak before sticking it in the loft, so just ordered one. Megadrive worked like a treat, although I need to get hold of a few more games to keep me busy, bring on the bootsales !

i wouldnt be so black and white as to call myself a retro gamer, but me and a few mates play games like streets of rage, mario kart, street fighter, tony hawks etc basically every weekend with a few beers. i like the stuff that comes out on xbox live too, playing banjo tooie at the moment.

in the process of buying an xbox controller adapter for the computer at the moment. then the n64 and ps1/ps2 games will be all ours, as we're currently playing on snes usb pads.

you should be able to play roms on your computer. you need an emulator (virtual console) and roms (the games.) legally you have to own the original carts, but it's an odd one because the companies that make them make no money from them now. if you're like me and buy retro games for the xbox etc, I think it's justified, you're doing your bit for the company, in just about the only way you can, shy of sending them some money whenever you download roms.

I don't game a lot but when I do it's often retro. I have every console from my childhood that I could get my hands on, got a loft full of them.

But.... I don't bother playing on the actual consoles, too much hassle. I just use emulators with the roms etc. No point in bothering with flash carts etc. If I were doing it all over again I would probably get an old chipped XBox and turn it into an emulator. All you need is a decent storage space and you can have an all in one games machine capable of storing and playing 1000s of games from multiple consoles/formats at the touch of a few buttons.

I have an xbox crystal setup this way up the loft. I generally don't bother with that either though as I just play on my laptop via PC, or wii... etc.

Tonnes of options, I don't think the actual consoles are relevant anymore as far as gaming goes... more for collecting.

Still playing on both my megadrive and N64, was gutted when I had to give the SNES I borrowed back to it's owner. I'm actually replaying through Ocarina of Time (yet again), shortly after buying an ocarina of my own (I learnt back in primary school but long since forgot how to play)

I think the flash cart route will be a good one, as you can play things as they were meant to be played, with the original control pads etc, its just expensive! I tried the pc/xbox option years ago (emulation and evox dashboard)... it was good, but it just wasnt the same, as the buttons were all in the wrong place. Not so bad if you are looking to emulate megadrive/nes/snes as they had very few buttons, but anything beyond that and its too awkward to play in my opinion, but then I am rubbish at games so am probably just using that as an excuse.

I remember reading up on MAME builds , I liked the idea of being able to play things like street fighter etc and some of the 32x stuff, do you think you will get your build underway soon?

Looking back at what I just wrote, I look like I might actually have some idea what I am talking about, but sadly thats not the case :wha:

Just that you mentioned the megadrive. I always loved the evox dash with the xbox.

The major downfall nowadays is that the flatscreen tvs aren't really suited for the RF inputs from the consoles... they really don't like it. I had my amiga 600 running for a few weeks before putting it away and getting out the emulators again.

I got a PSx style controller for the laptop. It's awesome. Plugging the laptop into the TV via HDMI then playing with the PSx controller is all I'll ever need. I've even been getting into the old PSx games, abes oddysee has been my go-to game recently. I always fall back to the tomb raiders too.

I play those on my PSP though. Cracking emulators for that little thing and it's fantastic on the move. Trouble is that you can lose hours sitting in the living room with the other half drawing daggers at you, you being completely oblivious lol. When it's on the telly she will happily moan that she wants to watch easties, with the PSP... there's nothing legitimate to argue about so it just builds and builds till the top blows off :D

Old psx games ay, I was looking around at those last night actually, die hard trilogy , ESPN extreme games, there are a fair few I would like to have a go at again, but I can't remember what half of them were called.

The tv thing will be a bit of an issue with the n64 and megadrive, looking on YouTube I think I can use s video cables which should clear that up a bit....pardon the pun.

The main one I want to stick on the tv is the n64, just because of its silly control, I could never find a suitable replacement to hook up to the pc, I had even tried a switch box that converted the standard controller to USB, but that didn't work too well at all, so it ended up in the bin I think.

The megadrive I will hook up when the new cable arrives and I will see what the difference is, if Its any good I may get a flash cart for it, if not I will just carry on using the pc and get a few USB game pads, or I may see if the old Xbox still works, gave it to the girlfriend to play around 4 years ago and its sat on top of her wardrobe ever since.

Just waiting for the flash cart to arrive for the n64, hopefully should be good, if not I know they are in high demand so I could sell it on ;-)

Would it make me sound like a purist if I thought using an emulator was missing the point, the look and feel of the old machine creates as much nostalgia for me as the the playing of the game, as does the old cartridges and game boxes, it always puts me in awe when I think about how far we've come in the past 20 years. My two sons are 8 and 10 and they have psp's, 3ds's, game boy advanced, x boxes and kindle fires and all apart from the game boys are dialled in to my wifi and everything is so instant and available and on line, I used to take streets of rage or shinobi in my school bag so I could go to a mates after school and share the experience of my newest game, changed days now though

I agree with certain aspects of that. For the actual gaming part of it I don't agree though. I enjoy the nostalgia of pulling out the megadrive with a few cartridges, blowing off the cobwebs and having a bit of fun on it.... but that's playing with the console and being nostalgic like you say.

When just wanting to play an older game it makes no odds to me what I play it on, as long as the look and feel of the game is as it was (which it always is) :D

Thumbs up for streets of rage!!

If my flash cart for the n64 arrives I will have to let you know what its like. I should think I probably will eventually get one for the megadrive, but until that point I will hook up a spare pc to the tv with some game pads.

I had a look on YouTube last night , and someone has a video of their cart collection.... Every megadrive and snes game ever released..... Must be worth a fortune!

Like others, I do like the feel of the old equipment, it's pretty impressive that all those games ever realised can be stuck on one sd card nowadays

Anyway I am rambling, I shall update when my new toy arrives , until then, I shall make use of emulation
