ALL our calls, texts, emails mobile or other are monitored whether you think they are, or like it. No exceptions.
They go through that listening place in Yorkshire that picks out "key" words that could be "suspect".

It's ok clint, we've decided you're not a threat to national security. athumb..

Your smart device is listening to you. But the company's running the apps arent.
Can you imagine 4billion active VoIP connections permanently open with Google, Amazon, insert random app here?
Your data usage would be through the roof, the company's would literally explode with denial of service overload etc.
Your mobile, Alexa etc has a simple subroutine LOCALLY running that listens for a key word. When it hears the word, it then has a second sub routine which says 'if words xyz are said, record the next and connect to ip address 1234.1234.1234 and run'
I work for a global IT company and we use the same Alexa driven routines for automation of server management and they DO NOT record everything. Ever. It cant
I have an android phone. So it has Google assistant, I also have Alexa mobile, Facebook video and a variety of different apps with mic access granted. Which one gets the mic if it's recording in the background? Or are you suggesting my phone has several open VoIP connections permanently enabled? In which case why is my data usage zero when I don't use my phone for a few hours?

This is what i'm most worried about https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/7945518/***-robots-hacked-record-users-expert-warns/

If you have one, ask 'Alexa, what is one hundred, one hundred, one hundred in Welsh?'

Just don't do it if the kids are around.

My spouse and I think most of the electronics are unnecessary, to put it mildly. I put a strip of electrical tape across my camera on my computer. I disable wifi and blue tooth on my phone and any "location" setting.
I don't know what the full, negative impact of people "living" in their phones and other electronics will be, ultimately, but it's not natural to be thus absorbed.
I know of a production company (puts on events) that read people's phones to get their info without their knowledge. They were talking in the meeting like that was no big deal.

An interesting bit of the OP was about catching a crime in progress (potentially).
I don't know how the US is handling it but since 9/11 I've watched a lot of rights being slowly eroded away.
I have a neighbor who is breaking about ten city ordinances with regard to his dog. Basically, it's dog abuse.
After talking to him twice (he's a real no-responsibility-taking-c**t). So I call and I find out that unless it's an emergency situation, law enforcement can't do anything really.
It doesn't sound logical but, basically, the guy's right to privacy is what is stopping law enforcement. It's as if you have to pretend you can't see into the person's backyard.
I understand and appreciate the right to privacy aspect but a lot of the laws here don't quite make sense.

Our police force has been cut so much you are lucky to get your call answered when you ring the non emergency number, I recently rang because there were sheep on the main road (twisty road with blind bends) I waited 10 minutes listening to a recording about how important my call was then hung up.

I know this is off-topic but my wife and I would love (under most circumstances) to be delayed by sheep in the road. It's just not going to happen where we live. Got delayed by a mother duck and ducklings a couple times though.

Same thing here. I try not to say too many key words in one go. I have "replayed" in my head what I said over the phone to my wife, now and then, and have wondered if the FBI was going to pay me a visit. When that happens, I just straighten up the front room and prepare for a visit.
