Just started brewing again after about 5 years and have bought a few kits to begin with before AG commences!
Just a question, though regarding airlocks. I have never used them on fermentation bins so what's the benefit?
I normally just put a lid on with a small gap and wait for the yeastmagic!!

There isn't one . . . Fermentation bins are made with an airlock bung these days . . . so new brewers thing you have to have one . . . I do like you do and just rest the lid on. How do you know its fermenting . . . well that big F*cking yeast head is a bit of a clue . . . and the smell . . . and the ring of brown gunk around the FV means it has fermented and is finished. . . what more do you need to know . . . Airlocks . . . Just another thing to worry about IMO

Airlocks-same as neon lights under Essex boys cars

You should get straight into the attitude that you know what is going on by the state of your krausen. ;) The smell, the stae of the 'bits' etc.

It's a great forum because of you lot wanting to learn brewing-not us old farts who brew. :thumb:

timbowden,
it depends on the place where the fermenter stands. In case you have fruit flies or other nasties in your surroundings, I´d prefer to use an airlock. Especially if you leave the fermenter standing after the fermentation has finished. As soon as the fermentation has finished, means no more CO2 comes out, those nasties get in the fermenter immediately.

So better to use an airlock.

Cheers
