Hi!

I'm Fran. I first got into homebrewing by making mead in my kitchen. After I discovered that I like beer better than wine I switched to brewing beer in a bootleg setup, then graduated to grainfather brewing and I've got a couple of (too) large batches under my belt. Sadly most of my friends aren't big beer drinkers so I'm going to try my hand at cider next.

I'm very excited to be here and hope to learn lots from you fine folks!

Welcome. If your mates don't like beer and you do, don't change your drink, change your friends! You can't make cider in a grainfather!
It took me wayyyy too long to find the current batch of friends 🤣 I quite enjoyed making mead and I quite enjoy drinking cider so I'm just going to go with that in my trusty SS Brewbuckets

Good on you. I was only joking. I'm told I've got a weird sense of humour, although it seems perfectly sound to me. 🤣

Forgot to say, I make mead, too, and I love cider. But only West Country with proper cider apples. Not sure I could get into "turbo" cider or stuff made from cartons of juice. We've got a small orchard here and the first thing I did was put some one year old cider apple trees in there. Hoping for first proper crop next year.
What's your favourite?

In a perfect world I could do it all, but for now I want to give cider making a serious try! I made one batch that had a severly sulphorous smell and I'm determined to make something drinkable!

Welcome onboard. I love making cider as a change from beer. It's ridiculously easy if you're just using supermarket apple juice. If you can get hold of some cheap demijohns then you can split your batch and try loads of weird fruit and spice additions. I've just done a ginger and cinnamon one ready for Christmas.

Do you have any specific recommendations for a juice brand to use / yeast? I've used kveik yeasts for mead in the past and they fermented super nicely so I'm wondering if I can do a similar thing with cider.

I just use Aldi apple juice and CrossMyLoof cider yeast - it's an easy yeast to work with and clears up nicely. It's very dry of course. Check out the Turbo Cider thread for more detailed info and recipes.

Will do, thank you!
