Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone can cofirm whether it is OK to add cold water either direct from tap, mineral water or cooled sterilised water post boil when making an all grain or biab brew?

If your volumes are too low post-boil, prior to moving to primary fermenter, can you top the water levels up from the sources above during the cooling period?

If the entirety of the final wort has not been boiled with the hops etc, could the flavours be affected? Assuming infection is not a prob from water sources listed above?

Cheers

With kits and AG where I have needed to top up I have used mains tap water. Most people would suggest boiled water which has been allowed to cool but I have had no problems with just using tap water.

I used normal tap water when I did it, as my stock pot was too small for the whole batch. Was good for getting the wort down to correct temperature too. I did however use extra hops for the boil to counteract the later addition of water.

Nice one , thanks guys.

I was concerned that the addition of extra water might dilute the favours but considering I plan for a specific final volume then anything less would be more concentrated.

As for my concerns with the cleanliness of tap water, great to know there's nothing to worry about. My water is very hard but I use bottled water. I'm thinking now, with my next batch to start the BIAB with bottled water then top up if needed with tap, due to the small volumes the hardness shouldn't be noticeable. It's a waste to open a large bottle of water only to use a fraction for topping up the boiled wort, that's what has prompted the question as i didn't fancy storing a load of small 1 litre bottles of water lol.

Thanks again.
