Anyone who is using paper filters to (Polish their wines) please note. After observing flow rates etc etc . Anyone who is using Boots or equivalent paper filters and paying between £5 & £8 for a packet of 8 Filter pads please note. I went to Rymans and bought 5 sheets of Full Demy 445mm x 570 mm white blotting paper. Each sheet yielded 12 filter discs so 60 in total. The cost was £3-99p . So each disc costs 6p ,the results of using these are that one disc doesn't quite do the job whereas two do a better job. Even using 2 at a cost of 12p is far different to using filter pads costing almost a £1 each. Let me know if you try this or have anymore money saving tips. :)

Great tip :thumb:

I never filter my wine as me and Mrs Tea are the only ones who drink it and don't mind if it is a little cloudy.

hahahah lovely reply. Unfortunately I have family who finance my home brewing and they have become a little fussy.

My tongue was firmly pressed against my cheek when I posted the last post, having said that I have drank slightly cloudy wine when I have made kits and picked up a bit of sediment when tilting the DJ when racking.
I also find some wow goes cloudy in the fridge.

Hey BryanandJudie, thanks for the tip! I have 5 gallons of Elderflower which refuses to clear despite racking a couple of times into separate demijohns and treating 1 with kwikclear and 1 bentonite just to see if it would clear before treating the rest. Don't know what's gone wrong as I have always had success with Elderflower. We tried our (very old) Boots filter kit on it, not expecting too much, but lo and behold, it worked! Clear as a bell, but unfortunately after 2 gallons we have run out of filter pads, and the paper pads don't work (we tried about 5 together, thinking it would be as thick as the pad) Having been quoted almost £9 for 6 pads, we had decided to just chuck the rest of the wine away as we seldom use the filter (this is probably only the second time in about 3 years) I said before we do that, I'll just have a look at the forum, and managed to find your tip - I just hope it works for us!!
