Todays in my opinion is Christmas markets.

Tacky awful things selling overpriced rubbish or wonderful things adding to the festive season?

Tacky. The Edinburgh one is crowded and full of tatt!

Also, hotel prices shoot up when the market is on - I was in Edinburgh to see a band last Saturday and when we looked at hotels the Premier Inn was nearly £200. I paid less than that for the Radisson Red in Glasgow in October last year. Needless to say we drove straight home after the gig!

This may be wrong I haven't checked

One caller said markets in places like Germany are fantastic we copied them but ours are cheap imitations of the good ones.

Be interesting to know how much the local councils rake in in rent, as for the markets agree cheap tat over priced ale, Manchester i went once never been back
My wife did one in the 90s. Apparently the rates for a little "shed" were exorbitant. Or were in Bournemouth at the time. I can't imagine things have improved.

Absolutely this, we just don't have the tradition. I've been to Xmas markets in Vienna and Prague and they have been great. Mind you I think the crisp cold or snow rather than mild drizzle helps!
Nothing wrong with mild drizzle, you Philistine, so long as it;s proper, world-beating, mild drizzle. Just because we invented "warm snow" doesn't mean you should belittle it!

tacky? It's Christmas...ita all about tack. Just an outlet for small producers to get their wares out before Christmas. The German theme is just marketing..just like Irish pubs around the world.

If they get people out and about into towns and cities where the local pubs and bars will benefit then its all good.

Don't bother with hem personally, just cut out the middle man and go straight to the pub.

I’ve been to the Xmas markets in Manchester, Birmingham and Exeter and what’s been said about overpriced tat and booze is spot on. It’s been at least 5 years since we last went.
PS I hate mulled wine and German sausage is the wurst.

I live in York.... The 'Christmas' market is horrible. But if I still lived in Bratford, I'd love to visit it!

York....great for a festive boozing expedition.
York is not just for Christmas, it's good (great) all year round.

Tbh or tbf whichever the gen z seem relevant, if they want to pay £6+ for mulled wine or hot choc they can.

I'll nip in the Sam Smith's and have a cracking pint of black n tan for half the price.

Christmas market snobbery by some just the same as beer snobbery(Guinness tastes different in Ireland) rubbish is all about how the beer is kept.
I have been to many German Belgium and other country Christmas markets many times over many years . They are not much different to the Christmas markets in the UK, ok a little more tac and crafts but people are looking through rose tinted glasses re the continental markets in fact many are run by foreign market stall owners who come over just for the Christmas markets.
Open your eye and do the same with some beers that the snobs want to give them a bad wrap when they are good ales but may be mass produced.
Ps lets see how this riles a few? :laugh8: :laugh8: :laugh8:
