I’ve asked my lot who are coming to our house for Xmas dinner what side dishes they want, with Turkey, Pigs in Blankets and roasted potatoes as well as gravy, stuffing and apple sauce all a given
The choices are
Gammon joint
Yorkshire Pudding
Sprouts
Cauliflower
Leeks
Carrots
Parsnips
Peas
WHAT! no pineapple

Even though I grow my own veg, I prefer frozen button sprouts sautéed in butter. I don’t bother growing them, him indoors won’t eat them and my hens aren’t interested either. Much easier to keep a small bag in the freezer just for me.

And what a pain they are to grow.
We buy ours too.

Get a cheap pressure cooker. Hens will eat all manner of hard stem / greens if just cooked. And it improves the eggs. They eat by texture not taste (and anything red)

Althia & Donna are a fussy pair. Yes, hens usually like anything red, including red nail polish on the toes of a relative who visited while wearing sandals!! They’re not keen on strawberries and one is indifferent to tomatoes. They do like blueberries and cherries. They will eat sweet corn if it’s cut off the cob, but won’t eat it if it’s still on the cob. Over 20 years of keeping hens, I’ve noticed that they can have very different characters and tastes. Used to have one who almost hyperventilated when given asparagus. Hopefully Althia & Donna will be joined by a couple of new hens this spring.

Blimey asparagus. Never tried that. This year has been a bit tumultuous in the chuckiham, we had some rescues, that were so aggressive with everyone not in their tribe. They had to go. We then had some white hens @ 10 weeks we were told they lay blue eggs. Wrong. When they finally got around to it they are white concrete eggs 😲. And because we lost the faith another 4 arrived.

We now have 8+ every day 🤪
