1 gallon batches

Right, 1 gallon demijohn is quietly bubbling away.
I used a variety of programs for an idea as mentioned in previous posts; i also used a youtube video for a guide as well - search Bens Homebrew to find his stuff.

Anyways, this is an experiment. I know it's not perfect but I just want to see what I end up with.
I used:

9oz Marris Otter pale malt grain (crushed)
1lb 1oz Muntons Light Hopped Spraymalt Extract
1oz caster sugar
1oz brown sugar
tablespoon honey
1oz Tettnang hops (no mor than 5.5AA %)
all water was mineral water.

1) I basically boiled 2 litres of water then steeped my grainbag for about 20 mins at 69 degrees celsius
2) I added my malt/sugar/honey (I literally had sugar dregs I wanted to use up & an inch of honey in the jar so thought why not?)
3) Stirred it all in as I raised the temp to about 93 degrees celsius
4) Added hops and boiled them for 15 mins
5) Ice bath then strained it all into demijohn. Topped it up with water. Pitched half a satchet of yeast I had spare - plain yeast packet I had left over from a kit; just the letters LEB on satchet.
6) Airlock on; finished it all by about half 4 this afternoon. As of this evening, it's bubbling every three seconds.

Like I said, just an experiment - not sure what i'll get out of it but it'll be interesting to see/taste!

Off tomorrow; may repeat it but with Muntons Medium DME, 1oz Tettnang & 1oz Aramis and mash for an hour.

At some point overnight, the airlock overflowed with malty goodness; it looked like there was a tiny petrified malt tree coming out of the demijohn. After cleaning up & replacing, it's back to bubbling every 2 seconds now.
I'm waiting until the other half goes out to get her hair done before I attempt a second batch...

Just finished bottling; primary fermentation finished on Friday but only got round to bottling today due to other commitments. Got about 7 pints out of the 1 gallon batch, give or take (had about half an inch of crud at the bottom)
Primed it with 4 teaspoons of sugar; 2 light brown, 2 caster (remember being told half a teaspoon per pint...) and had a wee sample at the end - definitely got a noticeable but not overpowering hop taste to it.

Wonder how dennisdk2000 is getting on with his...

I had a similar overflow.

Well this is something i'm very interested in as I am only wanting to make small batches I am going to look at biab as I have a 14L pan. I am actually thinking of a mini mash tun and lauter tun in similar sized pans.

I am using brew software which I find very useful as I can scale batches and fit my beers in to the desired styles. Unfortunately i have a mac and cant find any free software, i am coming to the end of my trial of beer alchemy.

Only downside is I now want to make the leap to partial mashing.....d'oh!

The best software out there is from BeerSmith and they now do a Mac version http://www.beersmith.com/features/

The best rarely is. They do allow a trial of the full version for 21 days which is enough to appreciate its qualities. At around £18 it will save you that in making mistakes, as a new brewer it helps to get you past the sort of mistakes that has people giving up.

The best free one I've used is Brewmate but I don't know if there is a Mac version. But did see an FAQ answer that said it might run in MONO, but know idea what that means.

Will post photo(s) and feedback by the end of the week; my Dad cheekily had a crafty one today - i'd labelled the bottles "Experimental Beer Batch #1" which didn't put him off.
Even he couldn't place the flavour - i had a sip & think it's come out like a very mild bitter
